WE ARE GAINING GROUND.
We cllnped these two paraKraphs
from the Orangebun? Times Jnd He-
mociat:
It is perfectly safe for ladies and
children to attend a campaign meet-
inr in the dispensary cotint / of Or
angeburg. but we would not advise
( hem to do so in the so-called nrohibl-
ion county of Cherokee, if Saturday s
meeting is a fair sample. .
As will be seen by an article on the
first page blind tiger whiskey got in
it.i work in Cherokee county on Satur-
<ia v Yet some good people in that
county delude themselves with the
belief that they are having prohibi
tion.
It appears that it is utterly impos
sible for our friends who advocate
the dispensary to be fair. The Times
and Democrat knows that meeting
not a “fair sample” for Chero
kee. Then it calls this blind tiger
liquor. Why Lord bless your soul
man. it wasn’t blind tiger at all, and
the article you printed didn’t s.av it
•was blind tiger. There is no law in
this county against a man drinking
whiskey, but there is one against
selling it. Any man who is disposed
to do so can send oft and get as much
as four gallons and three quarts at
one time, but he can’t sell it unless
he violates the law. The owner of
this liquor hauled it to the meeting
In a white jug. and. w'e are told, gave
it away to his friends openly and
above board, without money and
■without price. There was no secrecy
about it. Any man in this county
or any other county in the State—in
Orangeburg, for instance—can do the
eame thing and there will be no viola
tion of the whiskey law. It is only
when they become brutes and dis
grace themselves and the,i communi
ty by their misconduct that they be
come violators.
dust suppose this thing had occur
red in Orangeburg? Wouldn’t we
have had a great opportunity to blow
off some hot air against the dispen-
eary? But we couldn’t have truth
fully said that the law was being
violated.
This question naturally arises;
Of what effect voting out the dispen
sary, then, if one can buy all one
wants to buy? The answer is plain.
There are not so many people who
will go to the trouble and expense of
sending off for whiskey as there are
people who would buy whiskey If it
was handy, therefore the consump
tion is lessened and the community
is the better for it.
The Ledger makes no claims for
absolute prohibition, but we do know
that conditions in this county are
better than they were under the dis
pensary and we do not believe the
people of this county would return to
the old system. We are pursuaded
to believe that the cause of temper
ance is gaining ground in this coun
ty.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Poor Salisbury is getting it on
>verv hand. The press, not only of
North Carolina, but of the other ad
joining States heap all brands of con-
iemnation on its shoulders. These
same shoulders will doubtless bear
up under the burden hut it will
surely be a strain.

The candidates continue to "roam”
across the country. The word roam
In reference to candidates is borrow
ed from a neighboring editor who
aptly uses It in this connection. The
Cherokee candidates are being well
received and accorded respectful
hearings at all points visited. Hap
pily no personal fights have been
brought into the political matters.

The incident in regard to railroad
rates which arose lu Gaffney between
Wharton and Summersett, was re
vived In Spartanburg. t The discussion
In Spartanburg was between Col.
Wharton and the Spartanburg Herald
as to whether this incident was a
wager or not. Col. W’harton calls it
a gentleman’s argument while the
Herald refers to It as a bet. Webster
seems to be with the Herald.
