Sentiment That Gibbs Did Not De
serve to be Hanged.
Georgetown, Aug. 2.—Tomorrow,
between and 11 o’clock William
Gibbs was to have died on the gal
lows for the killing of Ned Ander
son on the second d^y of April last.
But there will be no hanging here
tomorrow, for a telegram was re
ceived from Governor Heyward by
Sheriff Scurrv todav stating that the
sentence of Gibbs had been commut
ed to Imprisonment for life in the
State penitentiary.
A strong recommendation to this
effect had been sent to the governor
from this county. It was shown that
the roan killed by Gibbs was a no
torious and despeftbe character, a
bujly. and that the deed was commit
ted in self-defense. Judge R. C.
Watts, who tried the case at the
last term of court here, entered into
the recommendation for a change of
sentence to life imprisoment. The
'•'ry in bringing in the verdict failed
to recommend the prisoner to mercy
and the extreme sentence was ac
cordingly pronounced. It is the gen
eral feeling here that the n’gro was
entitled to the lighter sentence of
life imprisonment and satisfaction Is
felt at the governor’s action at the
moment.
Gibbs had resigned himself com-
nletely to his fate, and was continu
ally praying and holding services in
the Jail. He has conducted himself
well during his confinement. The
news of the cummutation of sentence
was received with slight evidence of
joy due. partly to its entire unex
pectedness. perhaps. The negroes
in town are delighted.

RHEUMA
ALMOST AS COMMON IN SUMMER AS IN WINTER.
While the damp, cold, changing weather of <?
Winter intensifies the pains and other disagreeable i
symptoms of Rheumatism, it is by no means a ^
winter disease exclusively. Through the long
months of Summer its wandering pains and twitch-

the uody, and as this vital stream goes to every
nook and corner of the body, the poison is distrib- U1

from lack of rich, pure, blood, the skin becomes fe- -
verish and swollen, the stomach and digestion are y
affected, the appetite fails and a general diseased t -
condition of the entire system is the resuU.
Not only is Rheumatism the most p.iirfful of T
all diseases, with its swollen, stiff joints, ikrobb./g h
muscles and stinging nerves, but it is a formidable
and dangerous trouble. If the uric acid b allowed
