will enjoy it.

mill tearm The batteries were: Gra
ded School—Thackston and Pryor;
Mill—Champion and Buchanan.
Work was resumed on Gaffney’s
new' well yesterday. A suspension of
several davs was necessitated by the
supply of rope being exhausted. Four
hundred feet of a fresh supply is now
on hand and those in charge are now
engaged in continued boring. A dis
tance of over a hundred feet has been
reached and progress made is very
satisfactory.

While in conversation with ,a Led
ger man a few days ago, County
Treasurer W. Harry Gooding, who is
a candidate for re-electi^” to that
office, remarked that his contlitfon
physically was such that he was bare
ly able to accompany the campaign
party and that so far as making anv
elaborate remarks at the meetings
was concerned that it w-as clearly im
possible. He was desirous of The
Ledger so stating through its columns
in order that his friends might be ac
quainted with the state of affairs that
exist in regard to this matter.
The ladies of the Presbyterian
church are preparing to have a flower
show this fall. It will remembered
how popular these shows have prov
en in the past and how disapnointed
many were last season on account of
thf? fact that this annual attraction
could not be given. It would be well
for the flower p-rowers of the city to
begin to get in readiness for the
event. All preparations, of course,
are yet to he made. No announce
ments in the way of presents or de
tails are vet to be secured. These
attractions are universally popular
and Gaffney always makes them a
great success. Few cities in the
Stato possess such an arrav of beau
tiful flowers or any ladies better able
to cultivate them than does Gaffney.
Dr. C. A. Jefferies had in his pos
session a few davs ago a singular!v
beautiful and well made clay pitcher
that excited much comment from the
group of bystanders at the Cherokee
Drug Company w'hen it was exhibited.
When the genial doctor exulained
that it was composed wholely of
Cherokee clay and was made entirek'
in Cherokee county it brought forth
stil) more comment. He went on to
explain that he had run across a flue
piece of clay and had sent it to a
Cherokee pitcher factory and the
handsome jug now in his possession
was the result. The conversation
then turned to the different drinks
that could he enjoyed during this
weather from such a pitcher, but
when a few such as cold buttermilk
were mentioned the discussion was
brought to a sudden halt by the ad
journment of the party in search of
such.
Bill Dawkins graced the prisoners
bench at city court yesterday morning
with a case of disorderly conduct
staring him in the face. This did
not rattle Bill, however, as he has
experienced this honor before. This
time he w’as charged with beating
his wife on Saturday evening. No
body could believe Bill guilty of any
such awful thing if they could only
see the very pious look that always
adorns his countenance, in jail or out.
Bill, how'ever, seemed to have few
sympathizers yesterday when a sen
tence of fifteen or thirty was bestowed
upon him. This, when translated,
means that Bill was very gently and
very considerately asked to contrib
ute fifteen simoleons to the treasury
of the city or to labor faithfully and
well on the streets of the citv for the
space of thirty days. Bill will doubt
less ponder over this matter carefully
before announcing his decision.
