NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Republican bluff works first rate in
political matters, sometimes. but
somehow it does not seem to make
the dirt fly” at Panama.

The Armour trust was brought to
its knees by a competitor, but lifted
up with care by the Roosevelt admin
istration and given^half the swag
Now that the president has $25,000
for traveling, the railroad agents are
enticing him with all kinds of tales
about bears and other game in far
distant States. Last year when they
had to carry him on a free pass they
reported but little game and that very
wild and uncome-at-able.
Considering that the administra
tion has had full swing at Panama and
nil the monev it asked for for over
tw ^ years, it is rather disheartening
to hear Secretary Taft say the Amer-
icar> neople are in too big a hurry to
see the dirt fly. # # 0
The Maryland terrapin trust has
had a bad jolt in Pennsylvania, where
the attorney-general has decided that
snapping turtle is not terrapin. Thus
Is public opinion, even in that trust-
ridden State, compelling the Republi
can officials to discover that trusts
exist.

The papers are still throwing bou
quets at Charleston, and this notwith
standing the fact that it’s nearly a
month since the meeting of the press
association at tAe' Isle of Palms. By'
George, it seems that some of them
got intoxicated sure enough. But we
would not withhold anything frojn
dear old Charleston, nor her good peo
ple. Surely they deserve all the good
things that can possibly be said of
them, and we don’t care what is said,
we endorse it.

Attorney-General Moody has been
forced to admit that Judge Parker’s
c-^tention that all the laws under
which the Federal government has
prosecuted the trusts and corpora
tions existed prior to 1904. Will
President Roosevelt and Secretary
Cortelyou also acknowledge that
Judge Parker is right, or will they
still ’env it. as was the case about
his other charge that the corpora
tions were contributing to the Roose
velt campaign fund in 1904, which has
also been proven, but never acknowl
edged.

Such disturbances as that at Ma
bry’s Mill and that one in the city
Saturday night are sincerelv regret
ted by every man and woman who
has the welfare of the community at
heart. It does seem that decent white
men would learn to curb their pas
sions and refrain from indulging in
such unseemly conduct. It Is such
things as these that give Gaffney
undesirable notoriety. It may be
and W' indulge the hope, that they
are only electrical storms that will
clear the atmosphere. “Let us have
peacf^” were the words of Grant to
Lee, and we borrow them as a closing
appeal for the welfare of our com
munity.

The Columbia Record asks the law
yers of South Carolina not to vote for
Lyon, saying that he had no experi
ence before the Supreme Court, and,
in fact, no practice in the lower
courts. The lawyers of Abbeville en
dorse Lyon and praise his ability in
a signed letter, but as yet we haven’t
seen where The Record has been fair
enough to retract its statement. My!
niy! the length to which these dis
pensary papers will go! It’s amazing
to see men stoop so in the advocacy
of a cause. Under no other circum
stances can we conceive of Paul
Brice bein 0 ' so unfair.
