Columbia. July 31.—There were several bunches of millions of dollars represented at the meeting of the State Board of Equalization here today. The board gathered to hear the complaints of the cotton mills, cotton oil mills and other corpora tions that thought the valuation on their properties had been fixed too high. The values were frankly and fully discussed. The members of the board wanted light and facts and the representa tives of the corporations seemed dis posed to give all possible informa tion. The board agreed that it would first of all hear what the visitors had to say about the 100 per cent, values as fixed by the board. The basis of as sessments is to be fixed Later. For today the question was what should be regarded as the 100 per cent, or full values. Mr. Wilson brought to the meeting of the board from the comptrollers’ of fice long and serious looking sheets. They bore the summaries of the re turns on real estate as reported by the auditors of the various counties. Three counties strange as it may appear have not yet sent in their final figures on real estate. The figures, here given, do not relate to cotton mills, railroads, oil mills, personal nroperty. and other classes of prop erty that are otherwise taxed. The figures as made up from the county auditors abstracts are chock full of interest. They show a decided increase in values, not only in real estate but in all classes of property and it is altogether a mistake to im agine that real estate is the only class of property showing an increase. The figures presented to the board are upon the tax returns reported to the comptroller general and the whole point is to equalize values and see that no one countv pays more than the other; for instance, the returns nati, Ohi6. are in Anderson county where the Believing that E. Expert testa prove thot ii requires and takes a smaller amount of sweetening than any other kind—and has a wholesome, stimulating and satisfying effect on chewers. Internal revenue statistics show that SCHNAPPS and other of the Reynolds brands won enough chewers in one fiscal y_ar to make a net gain of six and a quarter million pounds, or one-third of the entire increased consumption in the United States on chewing and smoking tobacco. 3e sure the letters on the Ug and under the tag spell S-C-H-N-A-P-P-S, and you will have the genuine.
