Op this occasion Gold Smith, a ginger cake looking negro youth, filed In with the usual look of injured in nocence. or possibly in this Instance it might have been a little mure pro nounced. Gold slowly took a chair, one, by the way. that is only allotted to criminals of the darkest hue. and one glancing casually at the person would almost take oath that he was a hardened criminal and charged with a most henious and revolting crime. Matunally the spectatiors. as well as The Ledger reporter, were greatlv surprised to hear the citv clerk sol emnly announce that one Gold Smith, colored, was charged with riding a bicycle on the sidewalks of the city of Gaffney. Gold, however, vl- wed the case as no laughing mattei and considered it seriously all the time. He proceeded to enter into an ex planation at once. Gold’s stor/ ran about as follows: That he wa^ a re sident of Gaffney and a loyal citizen but had been absent from tl e citv about a month, and had ink uraliy aeen unaware of the existence of the bicycle law. Gold, however, admit ted that he had ridden on the side walk and was fined the least fine pos sible. Pay one buck or toil five long days. The buck was an important tem with Gold but the days are long and hot. hence the dollar was soon 'orth coming. % Later in the dav yesterday, after Gold had been released, the reporter met him on the street rolling a wheel barrow loaded with a bag filled with grain. On seeing the reporter Gold stopped him and asked if he coul be arrested for this. He was sent to in quire of Chief of Police Lockhart. W ajfons! A sensation was sprung in Gaffney Saturday afternoon when Deputy Sheriff W. C. Durham served an in junction from Judge Georp'e E. Prince, of Spartanburg, on Hon. J. Q. Little, as mayor of Gaffney, and on Messrs. R. A .Jones. A. L. Hallman. Z. A. Robertson. R. O. Ballenger, W. L. Settlemyer and H. L. Spears, as al dermen of Gaffney. The inunction js issued in a case of Samuel Jeffer ies against the Citv of Gaffney. The document Is a lengthv one and en joins the city through Its agents or policemen from interferring with Samuel Jiefferles or his agents or servants, or from trying James Mil ler et. al., servants of Samuel Jeffer ies. This injunction, it seems from the complaint mad'' before Judge Prince, which Is another lengthv doc ument, grew out of the arrest of James Miller, charged with obstruct ing a road. He was arrested and trial set for the 27th instant. It wa* then continued until yesterday and this injunction makes it’s date pf trial indefinite. From the complaint it is gathered that th- injunction is granted on the following grounds: Thursday after noon. while a baseball game was in progress at Jefferies baseball park, James Miller and others, acting as a-ents of Mr. Jefferies, stoped a road passing through the park in order to collect admissions to see the game. As a result of this Miller was arrested and placed under bond. The next step is the injunction. Mr. Jefferies alleges that the passageway stopped is not a road. WAS SEEN IN GREENVILLE. Grier, Sharon; Hon. J. C. Wilburn, Yorkville. Mrs. Harriett Hoburn Passed Throuqh Simpsonville. Greenville, July 28.—Recently the people of the Piedmont section were shocked and astonished at the cruel treatment alleged to have been ac corded a Mrs. Harriett Hoburn. who lived on a farm In Union county. It was stated in the newspapers at the time that she had been whipped and shot at and generally abused by sev eral ruffians. It was feared at first, after her disappearance, that she had drowned herself and her two small children. The woman did not drown herself, however. She passed through Simp sonville several days ago, wit* her children. She stopped at the home of J. A. Bnamlett, at that place, where she was supplied with food and tem porary shelter. She told those about her that she was going to the Poe mills at Greenville, where her broth- in-law, a man by the name of Kelley, lived. Diligent inquiry around the Poe mill village today failed to reveal the whereabouts of Mrs. Hoburn. and the pay roll does not show the ngme of Kelley. Roy Webster Goes to Mt. Pleasant. The Charlotte Chronicle says: Prof. H. A. McCullough, "resident of the Mount Pleasant Collegiate Institute, at Mount Pleasant, spent a few hours in the citv this morning en route to his home from a trip in the interest of his school. Prof. McCol lough states that he has just made arrange ments with Roy Webster, of Gaffney, S. C., to take the chair of Latin and Greek in the institute the coming sea son. Mr. Webster graduated with high honors In the class of 1906 from Wofford College, Spartanburg. S. C. During his collegiate course he took a very high stand in the literary de partments and was the winner of sev eral medals. Prof. McCollough con siders himself very fortunate in se curing the services of Mr. Webster. Services at Draytonvllle. A number from this city drove out to Draytonvllle on last Sunday to en joy the exercises of the dav at that well known sanctuary. The occasion was the date for the Sunday school union to meet at Draytonvllle and din ner was to be enjoyed on the grounds. The minister appointed to make the address of the day was not present, so Mr. Thompson, of the Draytonvllle section, made a Sunday school ad dress, and Mr. Charles A. S. Camp bell, of Midway, followed. After the conclusion of these eloquent address es the congregation was dismissed for dinner. After dinner Rev. E. G. Ross spoke on missions. Mr. Ross’s talk was in the open as the church was inade- ouat- to accommodate the Immense crowd.
