about 200,000.
Most ot the people are Chinese, Ma
lays. etc., but it is under English
bouthwest monsoon, and the north
side gets the other six months from
the northeast monsoon. The monsoon
is what we would call the trade winds.
As we approached the harbor the
monsoon wind was blowing a pretty
stiff sea, and the pilot boat came danc
ing out on the waves. We slowly
steamed in behind the barrier into
still water, and lay not far from the
big Australian liner that was to take
us on to London. Quickly the natives
swarmed around the boat and brought
their wares around to sell. Jewels,
and precious stones, carved elephants
and curios, laces and fancy things.
These swarthy natives, with their
picturesque dress, are great traders,
and woe unto the innocent passenger
who falls into their hands. Fortune
tellers, jugglers and such like nlied
their trade "'s well. We spent one day
in harbor, hut I went ashore only a
few minutes to buy some necessary
things. We were conveyed to the In
dia in a steam launch, said good-bye
to the genial captain Andrews, and en
tered our new home. I did not have a
chance to meet any other missionar
ies in Ceylon. We sailed out into the
Indian ocean again about fi P. M. and
at once began the battle with waves
and winds and sea sickness. The
passage of six days across the Indian
ocean was not a pleasant one. The
sea was heavy, the wind high and
down below the port holes had to be
shut, making it stuffy and hot. There
were many more passengers than on
the other ship.
We have on board people from Chi
na, Malay Peninsula, New Zealand,
Australia. Fiji Islands. Ceylon. India,
Port Raid in Egypt, and even two or
three Americans. There are three
hundred or more altogether. I should
say, first and second class. They
amuse themselves in many ways, each
according to his kind. A ship is the
world in minature. The old New Zea
land farmer who has made his for
tune and is taking what he called a
“tower” (tour) of the world with his
family, the young dandy, the young
ladv who wears a different dress every
day. the complaining people, the mer
ry Irishman whom Maggie, after see
ing him play the flute, called the “toot
man;”—but a whole catalogue would
include a description of every sort of
folk, so I won’t tire you with it. We
learn neople histories and hear of the
ends of the earth from f hose who have
been there.
We passed the Red Sea in about
three days, and one day in the Suez
Canal. Today I am writing at sea in
the Mediteranean. near the Island of
Corsica, the home of Napolean. We
are to arrive at Marseilles tonight.
Yesterday we passed Stamboli, an ac
tive volcano.

(Harper’s Weekly.)
A New York man was stopping for
a month at an island town in Florida.
This man is exceedingly fond of swim

this fear kept him from indulging in
his favorite sport in the nearby river.
He vvas fishing one day, and mention
ed his desire and the barrier to its en

rowful “cracker.”
“Oh. I kin Ax yo’ all up all right,”
the guide drawled, and led the way to
a beautiful little lake some distance
hack from the river. “Ain’t nary
snake in hyah,” he said.
The northerner enjoyed a half
hour’s sport in the clear water, and
then coming back to the white sand
beach, began to dress. He then ob
served that what he had taken to be
several logs floating upon the water
were in motion.
“Them ain’t logs,” his sfulde calmly
replied, chewing on a straw: "them

This is a sweeping statement,

The contradiction, however,
is only apparent. If they have
attained any degree of success
they have advertised. They have

in proportion to the thorough
