The Matter of Demanding an Apology
From the President Nauaeatlng.
(Special to Charlotte Observer.)
Pelham, June 23.—That Washington
special to The Greenville News in re
gard to an apology by President Roo
sevelt to Senator Tillman is /eally «i
little nauseating to some who are ac
quainted with the South Carolina sen
ator.
Of course no sensible people expect
the president to apologize for with
drawing an Invitation to the senator
to a White House reception on ac
count of his lawless attack upon Sen
ator McLaurin ir the senate hall.
The onlv ostensible purpose of dis
cussing such a proposition is to give
the senator newspaper notoriety, of
which he has already had too much*
of a certain kind.
The public has really never had
a proper understanding of Senator
Tillman’s political fight against Sen
ator McLaurin, and hence there has
been frequent unfavorable allusions
to Senator McLaurin's senatorial
record, whereas the truth is, no Dem-
acrat within the range of my kn9wl-
edge has proven himself to be truer
to Democracy and moral principle
than has Senator John L. McLaurin,
of South Carolina. He changed his
mind in regard to the Paris neace
treaty when the Filipinos attacked our
armv at Manilla, and war was declar
ed. and voted for ratification, but that
was not undemocratic, but a manifes
tation of good statesmanship.
In his canvass for the senatorship
tie pledged himself to Democratic
principles, but stated that in legislat
ing for the nation he would not be
restricted by partlzan politics, nor
sectionalism. He is a gentleman by
uereditary and training, a gold stand
ard Democrat, and a broad-minded
statesman of the type our country
needs.
He was offered an honorable and
lucrative office by President McKin
ley, but be disconcerted his political
enemies bv refusine It. Manv said,
however, that he wanted the United
-tales judgeship, and President Roo
sevelt offered him that office, but he
declined the favor and accepted noth
ing from the Republican administra
tion. but Its evident appreciation of
his high moral character and states
manship.
Whence, then, all the fireworks and
smoke against him? The movement
was originated. Inspired and directed
by - Senator Tillman, who saw that
Senator McLaurin’s growing popu
larity had to be reversed or he. Till-
mau would be deprived of political
leadership In the State. He then de
clared that Senator McLaurin was a
traitor to the Democratic party, and
commenced to paw the earth and fill
the political atmosphere with dust.
He raised a big danger signal and
sent up political sky-rockets as a
warning that South Carolina Democ
racy was in danger. He maniuplated
the State executive committee and
had it to pass resolutions condemning
Senator McLaurin's politics. He also
had the committee to construct a
special platform In order to exclude
Senator McLaurin from the senatorial
race, and thus force him out of
politics. Senator Tillman was In the
saddle and. like “Jehu,” he rode
furiously. He was virtually prosecut
ing attorney, witness and judge in
securing Senator McLaurin’s con
demnation before the executive com
mittee in its unprecedented expartu
proceedings.
The Democratic newspapers in or
der to be and appear loyal, heralded
Senator McLaurin’s condemnation,
political death and burial.
Senator Tillman Is verily guilty of
politically murdering Senator Mc
Laurin in the first degree—not that
he is greater in diplomacy, but he
had the power and he mercilessly
used It for all It was worth.
Now, if Senator Tillman really
wishes to square himself with the
world upon the line of apologies, let
him first apologize to the State of
South Carolina for his slanderous ac
cusation against the officers of the
State for dishonesty, and for being
bought by railroads with free passes,
before he got into office, and then
filling his own pockets with free
passes as soon as he could get them.
Let him also apologize for taking ad
vantage of "the farmers’ movement,”
and manipulating himself into office
by arousing prejudices and antago
nism upon false Issues, and for Im
posing through trickery a State-wide
monopoly whiskey speculation upon
the neople which has not only re
versed the principle of moral progress
throughout the State, but which has
demoralized and debauched every de
partment of State government, mak
ing corruption, graft and murder so
common as to disgrace the State
throughout the nation.
And then, let him apologize for
stating in a speech in Bennettsvllle,
S. C.. “that the preachers were in an
unholy alliance with barkeepers and
the devil in order to defeat the dis
pensary.”
