LIMESTONE COLLEGE
This is a happy season at Lime
stone College. The young ladies
have finished their collegp year and
in a few days thev will be back in
their homes. We sincerely trust they
have spent the year pleasantly and
profitably. We have been glad to
have them here. They have, by
their presence, added no little to the
glories and graces of the community,
and we feel that in their going away
we must be the losers. Some of them
will never come back to Limestone,
some of them may never let the sun
shine of their nature brighten our
community, but whatever they do and
wherever they go we trust they will
bear in their hearts and minds the
magnificent lesson delivered to them
on Sunday by Dr. Willingham. No
more beautiful, thoughtful or im-
nressive sermon Jjas ever been de
livered in Gaffney than was that one.
It was full of the Jivinest of heaven
ly attributes—love. It was such a
message as could only fall from the
lips of a man whose every fibre pul
sated with his theme. It was
thoughtful of Dr. Lodger to invite
Mr. Willingham here and it was kind
of Mr. Willingham to come. Gaffney
owes a debt of gratitude to both, and
Wp seize this opportunity to say to
them that the public is profoundly
grateful to both, and we trust Mr.
Willingham will not make this his
last visit to Gaffney.
And now, young ladie~ we bid you
a fond adieu. May your vacation be
fufl of happiness and joy, and when
the new college year rolls around we
hope to see those of you who have not
comiileted your studied once more.
To the graduates we beg to be allow
ed u> express the hope that the fu
ture holds in store for them nothing
that is not good.
VERY KIND.
The Expression of Our Exchange* on
the Industrial Edition.
The Gaffney Ledger of the 18tb is
sued an industrial special edition
which was entirely creditable—Char
lotte News.
The Gaffney Ledger issued an in
dustrial edition last week that was
highly creditable. Gaffney Is grow
ing right along and so is The Ledger.
—Greenwood Index.
The Gaffney ledger last Friday is-
c?i"d an illustrated industrial edition
that was a credit to that hustling pa
per and worthy exponent of the en
terprise of “growing Gaffney.”—Union
Progress,
Tlie Gaffney Ledger last week is
sued an illustrated trade edition
which was a credit U> that paper and
to the excellent town that it repre
sents. The Ledger deserves good
treatment at the hands of the people
of Gaffney and seems to be getting it.
—Anderson Mail.
Editor DeCamp and his co-laborers
ought to be proud of their excellent
industrial edition, issued on Friday.
It was a good advertisement for a
good town. Gaffney people are hust
lers, as is evidenced by the rapid
growth of their town, and this growth
is solid, too —Greenville Mountaineer.
The industrial edition of the Gaff
ney, (S. C.) Ledger, was an able
piece of .work all round. But then,
nothing short of the best is expected
of DeCamp. His enerprise and ener
gy has done great things for Gaffney
and Cherokee county. More power
to The Ledger and its able editor.—
Polk County Press.
During last week the Gaffney led
ger and the Charlotte Evening News
both came out with special issues.
The Ledger’s effort was most credit
able and reflects credit on our com
munity. The Charlotte News had an
issue specially relating to the Meck
lenburg Declaration of Independence
and wav brim full of information. It
is an issue that should be filed away.
—Cherokee News.
The industrial edition of the Gaff
ney Ledger issued Friday shows much
enterprise and good work on the part
of the publishers. Gaffney is a live
and growing town and The Ledger
has helped to make the town. Gaff-
nev’s growth has been the result of
no accident. The town’s develop
ment has been the outgrowth of na
tural and artificial conflitions very
clearly defined and unquestionable in
their existence and influences.—

A UNITED DEMOCRACY.
The chairman of the Democratic
convention of Kansas In his address
to the delegates sounded a kev note
that will have interest in Massachu
setts and shows that a united De
mocracv from the east to the west
and north and south is again to be an
accomplished fact. “The people of
Kansas." said he, “send this slogan
across the Mississippi valley and over
the Appalachian mountains to New
England. We are for free raw material,
and we are willing 6> give to the la
borer of the east free hides in compe
tition with our hides, because the
beef trust robs us even of the hair,
and then sells the balance to the east
ern manufacturer at a higher and
fixed price, so that the poor are shoe
less, Our Republican congressmen
have misrepresented us long enough.
We are in favor of the old-fashioned
doctrine as enunciated by Samuel J.
Tiiden and re-enunciated by Grover
Cleveland of a tariff for revenue
only. The time is past when we
should protect trusts and capitalistic
combinations. Protection, as de
clared by the republican party. Is
now used as an aid to the rich to
become richer and the poor to be
come poorer. Hurrah! for the unter-
rified Democracy of Kansas.
Mourn* Mr. Wood’s Death.
Pacolet, May 20.—How our hearts
were saddened Saturday when we
learned of the sad. sad death of Mr.
D. Baxter Wood, which occurred at
his home at this place Friday night.
He leaves a devoted wife, who was
Miss Bessie Jefferies, daughter of the
late Hon. Wm. Jefferies and two lit
tle sons, D. B. and William, and a
host of relatives and friends to
mourn his untimely death. Mr.
Wood was a devoted husband and a
loving father. He was just in the
prime of life, having celebrated his
thirty-ninth birthday in March. He
had only been sick a few days. All
that loving hands and skilled physi
cians (Jould do, did not relieve the
sufferer when at 11 o’clock Friday
night the death angel claimed him
as a victim. The funeral was held
at the Methodist church Sunday in,
the presence of the largest coucourse
of sorrowing friends that has ever
assembled on such a sad occasion
here The bodv w 'as laid to rest in
the Methodist cemetery beneath a
profusion of beautiful flowers. The
•funeral services were conducted by
Rev Mr. Mason, assisted by Rev. S.
A. Nettles, of Spartanburg.
Our hearts go out to the bereaved
ones in this their darkest hour of
life. God’s will he done.

WHITEWASH BRUSH
Anv sort of a rake may become a
muck rake when muck has accumu
lated to such an extent that the
health and safety of the community
require its removal. It Is the use to
which it is put that makes it what
It is. Theoretically, the greatest
muck rake in this country is Charles
E Hughes, whose work in cleaning
out the life insurance muck-beds is
almost as famous as that of Hercules
in cleaning Augean Stables. All hon
or to him for his work! He did not
try to besmirch the characters of
dead men, as Roosevelt did in his
book. Next to Hughes, the most use
ful muck rakes in the country are
those men, like Tillman, who expose
and condemn moral uastiness and rot
tenness in public life, even in the
W'hite House. The journals which
expose corruption and fraud are do
Ing the best possible work. It Is the
man with the whitewash brush, and
not the man with the rake, who is the
dangerous factor in public affairs,
A Scarcity of Candidates.
Editor Ledger:—There seems to be
a scarcity of candidates for the
House of Representatives. This
should not bp the case, for there are
plenty of able men in the county,
who, could they be induced to make
the race, would do credit to them-
selvec and our prosperous little coun
ty of Cherokee. If some man of abili-
tv would come out on the following
platform, I am sure he would have no
trouble in being elected: ,
Allow each county to decide wheth
er for prohibition or dispensary, and
to abolish the State dispensary when
a majority of the counties have voted
for prohibition. Allow each town-
shin to vote an additional tax for
road Improvements if it so desired.
Election of township commissioners
bv the loyal voters of the township
instead of appointment as at present.
A more efficient labor law, and one
which wW put a stop to the frequent
violations of labor contracts. The
election by the people of the trustees
of the various graded school dis
tricts, instead of appointment, as at
present.
