CONCRETE EXAMPLES.
If the Columbia Record’s “concrete
illustrations’’ were a little less ab
stract it would '»blige some of its
readers. If It would name some of
those “prominent South Carolinians”
who keep telling its Washington cor-,
respondent good things about thf. dis-
S ensary, the weight of their testi-
lony would doubtless be of great val
ue to the instifcu+t >n, causing many
prohibitionists to tl<*ck to its support.
Then there is that “observant Co
lumbian. whose business takes him
all over the State and especially into
rural communities” and has found
that farm labor “utterly demoral
ized” in counties *'here the dispen
sary has been voted out. and “sincere
prohibitionists had become disgust
ed with the practical workings of
prohibition.” Perhaps “the Columbi
an” would not ih'ect to having his
name made know i, since “he did not
obtain this opinio*, trom a few chance
expressions In ore- or two localities,
but it was the siucensus of opinion
everywhere” and almost with one
accord the farmers asserted that the
substitution of prohibition for the
dispensary bad iemoralized their la
bor.”
The “obstervair. Columbian.’' who
la so much concerned about the dis
astrous results >f making it difficult
for farm labor to get whiskey, would
perhaps be willing to give the names
of a dozen or two of the farmers In
each of the proh'l it ion counties who
voted against th - dispensary and
change of heart,

This would be ic
the “concrete.”

Candidates .for governor of South
Carolina are beginning to announce
themselves. Alerady three have tak
en their seat on the dispensary band
wagon, while only one has mounted
the water wagon. We are in favor of
the water wagon, but we are nob in
favor of the man who elects himself
the only man capable of driving. Mr.
Joel Brunson is a very nice fellow,
but we want to see a bigger man than
he as governor of South Carolina.
