Gaffney, S. C., April 30, 1906. Dditor Ledger:—Will you please publish the following letter? If you all are through with the much-abused prisoner, George Hasty, I would like for you to answer the fol lowing questions: If it had been someone killed from the cotton mills or from the country, In a fray, would you all have gone crazy over It? Would you and your great city, that excels the ancient city of Naza reth and Is fully a match for the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah In some re spects. have chipped in and raised three hundred dollars for their fam ily? Did you. when Brown was murdered out in the country and carried off in the old field like a dog and lay there for a. week before he was found.,raise a fund for his poor widow and father less children? Was not Mrs. Browrn eeen on your streets thinly clad in tlm* of cold weather, and did any man give unto her? It seems to me that you did all that any people could do for those two show women, except breaking the alabastine boxes of precious ointment. Whv did you all take such interest in people you knew nothing about, only by th« business they were engaged in? Are they not as the lilies of the field? Do they not speak for them selves? Proverbs 23:27-28: “For a — is a deep ditch and a strange wo man is a narrow' pit; she “ ,<! o lieth in wait as for a prey and increaseth the transgressors among men.” How about that little jabilee that was started at the fcourt house that His Honor knifed in the bud? Was it a <me-sided affair made up before hand or was it not? Now. before you start to build that monument spoken of in honor of the two men. and from whence their honor came, I have seen letters written to parties here from men of other Staces in regard to characters if you will publish them. I can get you copies of the same, as they might help you in raising funds for that monument. I take no pleasure whatever In writ ing this letcer, but simply do so in Justice to the much-abused prisoner. G W. Stegall. answer our Our correspondent errs In thinking be was a total stranger to us. The evidence! did ont go to show that the reference of our correspon dent to Proverbs 23:27-28 is Justifi able. On the other hand, the action of the w'omen dispute this. We know nothing about toe “little Jubilee,” except that the prosecution had witnesses here ready to prove that the star witness as to the “little jubilee” could not b e believed on oath. The ’ letters w'hich our correspon dent speaks of may have been written by people who were •interested and whose only object was to attempt to break down character in order to save a man who had ruthlessly and hastily violated the law rather than to show' mercy unto those whom they knew not. In conclusion we might say, and with perfect truth, tha;- what we have written is only written In the Interest of what we conceive to be right. We repeat that we have no feeling to wards George Hasty. Hig crime, how ever, Is no; justified by others that have been committed before his. Rather it was the accumulation of un punished crime tftiat brought down such a weight of indignation upon him. His victims were the unfortu nate victims of a man who had never learned to curb his passion or his tem per and he is the victim of his own rashness. If the same crime had been commit ted by any other man in Gaffney this newspaper would have taken the same stand, and we offer no apologies for so doing. We will attempt to friend categorically. To the first question we will say that had the victims of George Hasty been cotton mill country people we would nave pursued exactly the Ident ical course w e did nursue. except, if possible, we would have been a little morp strenuous. It comes with 11 grao- for anyone to attempt to preju dice the minds of these honorable working people against a man who associated with them all his life and who spent a part of his life on the farm and with mil! people, for which wp arp not ashamed and have no ex ruse to offer. We are not aware oi’ anv insanity on our part on the sub Speaking for ourself, we would have, under sijnilar conditions, contributor the same amount to anyone else. We can’t answer for Hi'' town. We might I add, however, that if we entertained | the same opinion of Gaffney as does our correspondent that we would eithe- lend our efforts toward trying to makp it better or hie ourself to a more tighteous city. It is evident that the people of our hustling neighbor know a good thing when they see it. Those South Carolina papers which are seeking to rob Charlotte of the glory of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence have mighty little to do. We are for the Declaration every, time. Its jealousy, that’s .all- Colum bia should be content with her sky scraper and Charleston with her “botry,” and allow Charlotte to con tinue xo revel in the Declaration.
