FOR WOOD—Both oak and pine; also Ice. delivered to any part of the city. ’Phone 176. V. I. Spurgeon. April 20 Imo. A Gaffney merchant a few days ago, by an innocent reply that he made to an Inquiry that was, If such a thing be possible, even more innocent than hi- reuly. threw a whole store full of people in such a state of amusement that it narrowly averted a panic. A customer entered the store, and when Mr Merchant stepped up and inquired as to his needs, he casually inquired if they had any chickens. On being answered in the affirmative, he re marked that hp would he obliged for two, if they were nice ones, and pos sibly three or four. Then the remark that caused this article aud very nearly created a panic was turned loose bv the merchant, and came as a bombshell on the assemblage: “Well, 1 am sorry, but I haven’t got any for sale; they are all up home in my hack yard.” If the customer had been a gentle son of Ham, this hint would have been sufficient, hut for the mer chant to throw it at an inoffensive customer seemed a trifle out of the ordinary, to say the least. Shortly after, before I had quitted the store, another customer camp in with an in- ouiry for butter. Whether he was t'' 1 ’ that the merchant had butter up at his home in his hack yard, is uot known, as I was too far away to catch the replv and when asked about it th< merchant refused emphatically, tn talk for publication. -o—o- Emotions of the Mind. -o—o—o—o—o—o- -O FOR SALE—Five lots near Glob© Mills, on main road, ranging from 2 to 5 acres each. Of course a large number of friends saw them off, and equally, of course. South Carolina rice was very much in evi dence. Thus when the hanny couple entered the train, "newly married” was stamped all over them, rice cov ering every spot possible on the ap parel of both. The passengers of the train all looked up, and when one would take occasion to glance at the expressions on their faces, which same impression must have been stamped on their minds, hp would see an expression that would defy any de fining. It was a glance in which all the good points which must linger in ev". human being sprang out. and for a few moments reigned supreme. A person that possibly never before smiled allowed his countenance to lip-nf up with a fleeting half-smile. Thp merry crowd indulging in the rk'' throwing, of course, were no re specters of persons, and when their prey sought shelter in tne cars, start ed the pleasant pursuit of pelting everybody and everything in sight with the grain. Another opportunity of studying human nature. On any other occasion not a single one of the pelted ones would havp stood the same without remonstrating, and that most emphatically. In this case not a murmur was heard, and every body took the bombardment without a murmur, and only pleasant com ment to the crowd. Wise and Otherwise. Every man knows some other man whom he would like to kick. Girls prefer mixed ' !o s, hut married women prefer hen parties. But the prettier a girl Is the less sense other girls say she has. Don’t place too much confidence In 1 a man who has been swindled by I you. There would be more wisdom in many a head if it didn’t leak at the mouth. WANTED.
