Don’t get uueasv abou; that indus
trial edition. We have been taxed
to our utmost to do the work that
has come to us the past three months.
There seems to be a lull, however,
and we’ll soon catch up. We want
1- "et out something creditable, and
v.ould rather delay the edition than
to he hastv and make a failure.

Mr. J. E. Norment. private secre
tary to Governor Heyward, has an
nounced his candidacy for i-he office
of Secretary of State. We have no
hesitancy in saying that there will
he no more gentlemanly or fit can
didate for any office during the cam
paign than Mr. Norment. He is thor
oughly capable of discharging the du
ties of the office he seeks, and those
who vote for him "ill have honored
themselves by so doing.

Col. J. H. Wharton is making a
lively campaign for re-election to
the board of railroad commission.
The Colonel is an old-school gentle
man, a popular man, and a good rail*
road commissioner, and we would like
to see him re-elected because his past
experience has placed him in posi
tion to do his work the better. And
then again, Cherokeeaus must re
member that he has been a factor
in giving us our handsome new depot.

Thp hoys and girls are taking some
interest in our story contest, but not
so much as wo had hoped. Already
we have a number of stories, hut we
want a few more before w<> begin to
publish any. On account of school
duties, we have not urged the mat
ter. and will noi do so until the
present school term ends, as wp do
not want them -n do anything that
might interfere with their studies. It
is therefore well to bear in mind that
the contest will not 1 begin until after
the schools close.

Did vou notice the splendid local
paper we issued last Tuesday? It
covered the local field in every phase.
It was news of interest, too. The
railroad and tin mine items were of
especial interest to those who delight
noting the material advancement
ot this community. The Ledger has
in reserve two other items of local
advancement that will pleas P the peo
ple. but the news has not been re
leased for publication, so we must
bide our time.

The Gaffnev Ledger says that
everv Cherokee County candidate
should he made to ‘‘declare either for
or against good roads.” It is easy to
guess which wav thp candidate will
declare himself, but it is more doubt
ful whether his declaration will re
sult in greatly increasing the num
ber of miles of good roads In Cher
okee. Good roads have to be paid
for. and the proper person to declare
himself on the issue is the taxpayer.
Everybody is ‘‘in favor” of good roads,
but not all are willing to belt) pay
fur them.—Columbia State.
It is ver. r evident that the esteem
ed State does not quite understand
the method in our madness. Of course
all he candidates will be in favor of
good roads, bur we want each and
everv candidate to sav so. in order
that the subject may be discussed and
interest aroused. Every man may he
in favor of good roads, but unless in
terest i» awakened and somp effort
made -o secure them, we will never
have them, and the onlv way to cre

SMOOT AGAIN—
HE Smoot investigation, with all

are any less reprehensible when prac-

when perpetrated by anv other show-
