New York, April 11.—That the fed eral authorities’were not satisfied with the outcome of the investigation insti tuted against Moses Haas and Freder ick A. Peckham last year for having, it is alleged, couspfred with Edward S. Holmes, Jr., of the bureau*of statis tics, to secure advance information concerning the government's officiai crop report, and which resulted in th*> discharge of Haas and Peckham wa* shown by the arrest late Tuesday of Moses Haas. Haas w-as held by Judge Adams is the sum of $1,300 bail, which he'^fnr- nlshed, and was released pending an examination on a date to be determin ed later. Shortly after the grand Jury in Wash ington indicted Haas and Peckham, Haas was arrested in New York and Peckham at Saratoga. Former Assistant United States Dis trict Attorneys Marx and Miller, rep resenting Haas and Peckham in New Yoi'k made the novel plea beforw Unit ed States Commissioner Ridgeway that their clients could not be held for Holmes’ official misconduct in New York, that being a crime peculiar to the District of Columbia. On this the two men were discharged. Preparing to Mov« Berries. Washington, N. C., April 11.—Extern sive preparations are being made for i handling rtie strawberry crop, which will begin to njove about the 20t)h of this month. Williamson’s appeal for a new trial until June 1. The federal grand jury returned an indictment which is be lieved to connect the Oregon land frauds with several prominent men of Oregon, California and several eastern states. Lock- ey, tax assessor of Jackson county, Fla., was killed Tuesday night at Snead on the Louisville and Nashvllls rail road. Mr. Lockey attempted to cross the track ahead of the train, and al though he was seen by the engineer and the emergency brakes applied, was rtm down and badly mangled be fore the train could be brought to a stop. Death was instantaneous. Insurance Bills Passed. Albany, N. Y., April 11.—The senate has passed unanimously two of the Insurance bills, one amending the gen eral corporation law as to acquisition of real estate by life insurance com panies, the other amending the penal code so as to prohibit the giving of re bates In life Insurance business. Both bills have passed the assembly, and now go to the governor. Health Commissioner Wage* Fight New York, April 11.—Health Com missloner Darlington made the first move Tuesday in his campaign against the violators of the smoke ordinances Frank O. Burke, of the Mannattan Soap company, was arraigned in court for using soft coal. He waived examina tion and was held in $1,000 ball Joe Jung's House Burns. Elberton, Ga., April 11.—The housi »nd contents of Joe Jung Elberton, i Chinaman, have been totally destroyed by fire. Joe Jung Is now in Fulton county Jail under the charge of per Jury.
