New York, April 11.—"I don't know how long my stay in this country will be, but of this a am sure, that while here I will try to do something for my fatheraind.” Maxim Gorky, the Russian novelist, made this statement in his cabin on board the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosso which arrived Tuesday evening. Gor ky, who was registered in the passen gor list under his real name of Pash <off, is accompanied by his wife and a secretary. The steamer was boarded at a quar antine station by a large deputation of Russians, representing many differ eut political partios. Chief among these was Gorky’s adopted son. Washington, Ga., April 11.—The safe In the office of the Southern Express company’s office in this city was loot ed Saturday night while the agent, J. R. Smith, was at supper, and about $80 in gold was obtained. In the same chest containing the gold was between four atid five hundred dollars In silver and greenbacks, but this was unmo lested. Circumstances pointed strongly to the guilt of a 17-year-old lad who had recently been discharged from the em ploy of the company, and he was brought before the agent and police and questioned as to his whereabouts on Saturday evening. When he became very much confused in his explana lions, and made several contradictory statements regarding the matter, he was told that, unless the missing gold was forthcoming by noon he would be put behind prison bars. Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock J. R. Smith, the agent for the express com pany, was handed a tobacco sack con taining seven gold coins of $10 each, together with $10 in currency and sil ver. With the money, wnlch was sent by a small negro boy, was a note, sans address and sans signature bearing these words, “This is the moneys that was taken from you.” N'o arrest has been made. FIRST CAR OF STRAWBERRIES. South Alabama Will Produce a Large Crop this Season. Montgomery, Ala., April 11.—The first carload of strawberries shipped this season from the berry region of southern Alabama passed through the city of Montgomery Tuesday. The car was a consignment to deal ers at Pittsburg, Pa., and was shipped from Castleberry, tho center of the strawberry district of Alabama. The frosts of March did not do the damage to the strawberry crop that was at first reported. Only the blos soms were killed, and the embryo blooms, under the influence of the bright spring sunshine and the warm April showers soon put in an appear ance, with the result that In 28 days from the date of what seemed a total annhilation of the crop, car load lots of the berries are being shipped to the northern markets. More than 300 cars will be shipped. Strike Fast Diminishing. Wheeling, W. Va., April 11.—Agree- ments have been reached between the miners and operators of tne Fifth Ohio subdistrict, and the strike along the eastern Ohio border is fast diminish in; Announcement was mad* Wednesday that the scale had been signed by the American sheet and tin plate company, the James Mining com pany, James Crosby & Ron, and the Wayne Coal company. Chicago, April 11.—John Alexander Dowie, who is still in this city, with no apparent intention of visiting Zion City, has authorized a brief statement which was issued over the signatures of the leaders of his immetkate fol lowing. It is announced in the state ment that Dowie is peaceful and confi dent of ultimate vindication on all the points of the present crisis in his af fairs. Memphis, April 11.—The Mississip pi had a stage of 35.8 feet here on Wednesday, which is 2.8 feels above the danger line. Large areas of bot tom land north and south of Memphis are under water. The levees, however, are holding the vast volume of water to its channel and it is believed the fertile land protected by them will es cape an overflow.
