GOOD ROADS.
Somf. one has said that all men
were crazy about one thins or an
other. We confess to our share of
that trait of insanity in a desire that
Cherokee county should possess Rood
roads. To show how much we are in
ne^d of good roads the following: ar
ticle by Prof. P. T. Brodie, professor
of mathematics and civil engineering
in Clemsou College, showing the cost
of bad roads, is taken from a pam
phlet issued at Clemson Agricultural
college:
“The proposition that good roads
pav should generally need no argu
ment. But the tax for bad roads of
ten impresses itself so insidously as
to be greatly underestimated. The
farmer who has become accustomed
to hauling his cotton and other
freights over the hills and through
the mud or deep sand, on the old road
that has served his community for
several generations, often does not
stop to consider how badly he h vio
lating those principles of profit and
loss which have formed the basis of
his business successes.
“The director of road inquirie at
Washington has learned that w^' are

fearfully mangled about the stomach
and cut elsewhere.
The bodies wer P carried to Blacks
burg and thence to Greenville. Rel
atives of Fireman Looper were pres
ent when th P bodies were found.
The following Southern officials
have been in attendance at the wreck:
Superintendent P. L. McManus, of
Charlotte; Trainmaster T. P. Weston,
of Charlotte; R. C. Harding, road-
master, of Charlotte; D. A. Ballinger,
supervisor, of Greenville; J. M. Bolles.
suoervisor, of Spencer, N. C.; G. W.
Better, supervisor of bridges and
roads, Charlotte.
To the Editor of The Ledger:
Some weeks ago Mr. J. C. Otts oame
out in a voluminous card in the pa
pers, informing the people that he was
out of politics and would not be a can
didate for office at the coming pri
mary, giving as his reason that he
could not afford to make the sacrifice.
In the next issue of The Ledger there
appeared a communication purporting
to come from some person or persons
