Profitable lnv«atment.
(Greavllle News.)
Gaston county. North Carolina, has
voted three hundred thousand dollars
to build macadam roads throughout
the county.
Rockingham, N. C., will on May 12,
vote on a bond issue of three hundred
thousand dollars for road building.
Mecklenburg, N. C., now has 15G
miles of excellent graded and macad
am roads.
Land values over the entire country
increase in proportion as graded anJr
macadam roads are built and extend
ed. Good roads give farm lands a
value they could not otherwise have.
This is especially true of counties
having factory development. With
good roads, all fruits, vegetables, fire
wood, milk, butter and other farm
nroducts have a daily cash value.
Tae income from the«e can be made
..o great in the aggregate as the valu«
of the cotton crop. Without good
roads the factory hand, the city mer
chant, and all tha* increasing indus
trial population have to buy fresh
meat from Chioago and canned goods
from the North, whereas the farmer
might get the money for all meats
vegetables, fruit and other perishable
farm products if only he had a decent
roadway from his farm to the factory
town or city where cash purchases
are numerous and increasing. It is
said there are farmers’ daughters in
Mecklenburg county, N. C., who have
developed excellent business in milk,
butter, chickens, eggs, fruits and ve
getables.
Good roads are good investments.
Thev give business and social oppor
tunity and enhance the value of,farm
lands.
Witnesses Should be Protected.
(Kershaw Era.)
It does seem that there ought to be
some limit to the impeachment of the
character of witnesses. Under the la
titude now allowed in the examina
tion of witnesses in a court room the
character of the purest woman in the
world can be assailed, maligned and
blacktened without shadow of founda
tion for the impeachment of it. It
can be done by insinuating impeach
ment in the question propounded or by
the direct perjured testimony of a
purchased witness and she has no
protection therefrom nor redress
therefor, unless some male relative
shoud take the law into his own hand
and call the tnaducer to account.
If would seem that gentlemanly and
chivalric instincts in the one into
whose hand the character of any one,
more especially a woman, may be
temporarily intrusted through some
unfortunate circumstance making
them a witness, should be a sufficient
guarantee of the protection of that
character, unless there are some de
finite proofs that the character is bad.
We are glad to believe that Ihere
are some attorneys of our acqualn
tance who would not take advantage
of their position to blacken the cha
racter of an innocent person for the
sake of any cause, but there should
bp some restrictions laid un on those
who are not so considerate or scrupu
lous.
Everything possible was done to
acquit George Hasty of fiendish mur
der. A strong public sentiment and
an honest and a fair-minded jury
were pitted awainst the best legal tal
ent of the State. Sentiment and jus

ipiles of good roads through
out the county. The county is now
collecting road taxes which aggregate
$20,000 a year. This money is used
to build new macadam roads and it
builds about ten miles a year. At
this rate it would take fifteen years
to get 150 miles of graded and maca
dam roads.
Instead of waiting fifteen years for
good roads the county issues $300,000
in 4 per cent, bonds. The interest
amounts to $12,000 a year. This is
taken ou: of the tax money and $8,-
000 of tax money is still left for a
sinking fund for the bonds and some
surplus to put into repairs. Thus
Gaston county will have built imme
diately three hundred thounsanid
dollars worth of gftod roads and not
pav a cent more taxes than the/ have
been paying without them. It is
thought that the people of the countv
especially the farmers, will be great
ly benefitted. There are 20 to 30 cot
ton mills in the county. The good
roads win put the farmers in close
touch with the people working in
these factories and the working peo
ple rfnd the merchants can buv home
farm products' instead of having to
buy canned goods and bacon from
afar.
There is a lesson in this for ever"

county in the South.

the latter is convinced there are plen
