He Sees and * Wonderful Things. Gaffney was a city of wrangling yesterday. Anvone could see it half an eye. Not that it was domestic wrangling, or household troubles., but in this case the trouble was in the court room of Judge G. W. Speer, a court of Justice, with Justice spelled with a big “J." a place where there is always something doing, where they dispense Justice and important rul ings and decisions and hand ’em out like a groce.-.’man does butter and ■ The cliaracters in the tragedy, all we sav comedy? were princi- 11 v colored. There was ‘ncjthing doing.’’ That expresses it. There’s nothing more to be said. No more and no less; the sum total. No officers nor no mayor erected him. Not even the iollv city ball cat purred a greeting. Determined to wake up something in an effort for news, the scribe made a determined search for Tabby, the cat. and located her. thus having one act of labor performed during the trip. However, the cat stood, or rather reclined, as a memo rial of the rest and suggestive of the absence of anything doing—she was asleep. With the cat asleep and no sign of life about, the newspaper man hastened awav in search of “other fields to conquer." Yours truly, Sumter Littlejohn, The “Betsy Hamilton” Entertainment. Betsy Hamilton (Mrs. M. V. Moore), 'L lighted a packed house at (he S"ar H eaire Wednesday evening with one of her famous “Betsy Hamilton" re eitaD. A tremendous audience greeted the gifted entertainer on her first appearance and apparently none were disa->pointed and ail left tne house delighted. As an impersonator Betsy Hamilton has long been known and celebrated, and it was the com mon verdict of the Gaffney audience (bat in her line she has few, if any equals. The entertainment was given under the auspices of the ladies of the Meth' odist church, and was for the purpose of attempting to raise a mortgage on the parsonage. A neat sum was real ized for this laudable object. When time came for the curtain to go up the house was comfortably filled and before the performance had got under wav it was fiLed to standing room. Betsy made a great impression on the audience from the first. She was gracefully introduced by Rev. S. B. Harper, pastor of the Buford Street Methodist church. Every selection in the programme was received with great applause, and Betsy held the au dience in her sway from start to fin ish.
