Moscow, 'larch 21.—As the officials
were closing the Mutual Credit Soci
ety’s bank Tuesday afternoon, twenty
armed men surrounded the building,
which is near the bourse, and, covering
tjie employes of the banks with pistols,
they pillaged the place, getting away
with $125,000, and made good their es
cape in spite of the efforts of the bank
guards to arrest them.

St. Petersburg, March 21.—The No-

securing $1:52,500, says that the vaults
were still open and that the several
employes were present when the ban
dits entered. The latter numbering
twenty men. were armed with bombs
as well as with revolvers.

that the employes of the bank would
not be harmed unless they raised an
outcry in which event he would blow
up the establishment with bombs.
“We are desperate, and not afraid to
die,” said the bandit leader. Through
out the operation a member of the
band stood with a lighted fuse near a
powerful bomb which had been placed
on a table, ready to be exploded if
such a step became necessary.
In addition to lowering the window
shades, the telephone was disconnect
ed and when the bandits had complet
ed their work the employes of the bank
were warned that if they gave an
alarm within 15 minutes after the de
parture of the band, a bomb would be
thrown through the windows. The
bandits withdrew througli the rear eu
trance of the bank.

tor $50,000 brought against the Obser
ver company by Rev. D. .1. McKelvvay,
a secretary of the anti-child labor com
mittee, with headquarters in A! lama,
has been settled by agreement of at
torneys, without offering a xy evidence.
Following is the court record in the
ase:
"Tills cause coming on to be heard
upon the complaint and answer, the tol
lowing issues were agreed upon by tht
counsel of the respective parties,
those which arose from the pleadings
to-wit:
“First—Are the charges made of and
concerning the plaintiff by the defen
dant, as set out in the pleadings,
true?
“Second—What damages, if any. is
the plaintiff entitled to recover?
"The jury was thereupon empaneled
to try the said issues, and his honor
held that the burden of the second i.->-
sue being upon the plaintiff and the
burden of the iirst issue being upon
the defendant, the plaintiff had the
right and was required to first intro
duce evidence.
“The plaintiff, by his counsel, then
stated to the court that he would in
troduce no evidence at this stage of
the case, bearing upon the second is
sue.
“The defendant thereupon announc
ed. through its counsel, that it would
introduce no evidence at this stage ot
the case, bearing upon th; 1 second is
sue.
“The court thereupon instructed the
Jury that the burden of the first issue
being upon the defendant, and it hav
ing introduced no evidence, the answei
to that issue should be ‘No'' and tka
the plaintiff having introduced no ovi
dence bearing on the second issue, tlu
answer should he nominal damages, to
wit, 5 cents.
“The jury answered the issues as in
strutted by the court. Thereupon mo
tion of ihe plaintiff's counsel, it wu;-
adjudged that the plaintiff recover ol
the detenu..nt nominal damages, to-
wit, one penny, and that pursuant tc
the provisions of the statute, each par
ty should pay his own costs.”

Lieutenant Who Was Shot Monday la
Praised as Martyr.
St. Peter irg, March 21.—Lieuten
ant Schmid leader of the naval re
volt at Sebastopol, in November last,
who was tried by courtmartial, and
ahot near Otchakoff fortress, south
Russia, with three sailors sentenced to
death for mutiny, is made a hero and
a martyr, by the revolutionists.
Tlie boys of the St. Petersburg gym
nasium struck Tuedsay, in order to
compel the offering up of prayers in
school for the repose of the sou! of the
lieutenant.
The Russ prints a detailed acount ot
the execution, from which it appears
that when Schmidt received the news
that the authorities had refused to
commute the death penalty, he wept
for the three sailors. Ills companions,
saying they were so young and honest,
and he would prefer to die alone. The
condemned men were taken to the
small deserted island of Borizan, and
were shot at sunrise. Schmidt ad
dressed his exeeiitioners, sixty sailors
of the cruiser Teretz, saying: "1 die
for tue Russian people, and the father
land, many of you doubtless will here
alter share my death for the same
cause.”
Schmidt refused to accept the sacra
ment, and asked, not to be blindfold
ed. He ;net his death with head up
and eyes open-. The firing party was
stationed at a distance of 50 paces.
Two of the sailors were killed at the
first volley, and one more at the third.
Schmidt, did not fall until the fourth
volley.

ty, has been convicted in the Superior
court for burglary arid sentenced to
five years in ihe penitentiary. The old
lady from whom the young man stole
ihe money was Mrs. Goss about 75
years of age. She had for many long
years hoarded the amount from the
pay received from weaving and from
the sale of garden produce. Most ot
