An Event of No Little Importance. Speaking of “Betsy Hamilton.’' who Is to appear at the Star Theatre to morrow night, under the aiihdlces of the ladle* of the Methodist church, the proceeds of which are to go to wards lifting the mortgage on the Methodist parsonage, the Memphis. Tenn., Scimitar says: “The visiti to our city of Mrs. M. V. Moore, of Alabama, best know-n by her pen name, ‘Betsy Hamilton.’ ,is an event of no little importance ifi liter ary circles. Her flrsti visit to Mem phis was made several years since, under the auspices of the Higbee School, when for several evenings she entertained large and cultured aud iences by her remarkable persona tions. She has since made two other visits here, brought again by the Hiff- 1 School and by the Confederate Memorial Association, entertaining large audiences at the Lyceum Thea tre. “Brilliant, unique, inimitable—all who have seen an heard Betsy Ham ilton gladly hail another opportunity to do so: and, what is rarely seen, ask again and again for a repitition of ner most characteristic delineation. ‘Ole Mis' Freshours,’ ‘Babe’ and the 'Preacher’ are as eagerly asked for and as untiringly heard as is doe Jeff erson's ‘Rip Van Wilkie.’ Keenly critical, observant, discriminating, with a taste most refined, a manner most unaffected and with a remarkable ‘gift’ for personation, ‘Betsy Hamilton’ is simply perfect in her art. “As a writer for many years Mrs. Moore is well and favorably known as one of our best southern authors; but it is her personal character that en- deirs her to all who are privileged to know her. Her exquisite refinement, native modesty, perfect self-poise and tine ‘white flower’ of an unaffected piety make up an admirable personal ity that is gladly claimed as represen tative of the southern woman old or new—or, rather, of that which is still dear to the world’s heart—true wo manhood. “It is to be remembered that Mrs. Moore’s personations are her original creations, and have never been pub lished, though eagerly asked for by elocutionists and others. The ‘Geor gia Cracker,’ the mountaineer of the hill country of Alabama, the planta tion negro ‘befo’ de wah,’ all find rep resentation true to life in these en tertainments.” McLaurin May Run. (Columbia State.) Mr. W. F. Stevenson, of Cheraw, who was in the city yesterday, stated that there is a lot of talk in that sec tion of the country to the effect that Mr. John L. McLaurin may oppose Senator Tillman on the stump this summer. Mr. Stevenson thinks that Mr. McLaurin can command a larger vote than is commonly supposed, al though it might not be enough to de>- fea-t Senator Tillman. Mr. Stevenson is out of politics himself.
