Gaffney has long been regarded as
i cltv of wonderful resources, a city
where there’s “something doing” all
the time, where the sensational is
not only found but. if w e are to be
lieve the great and only comments of
our exchanges, it is a city where great
news items are discovered. It is a
city, however, that has legitimate
news and not faked news and would
not only found, but if we are to be
were the item now in question a
faked one; but none will dispute that
the great question now is a real live
lone ami one that is truly among the
all wool and a yard wide variety.
Turn the lights low and listen while
we spin the tale. As every storv
should start with the most important
happening in it, we will first tell the
news and that i^‘- Col. John M. Gaff-|
ney is married. So we are told. Not
that it is such a wonderful fact, nor!
one to be marveled at, but the circum
stances attending it are to be looked
at, from every point of view. He is
ho be praised for his act, for really!
and truly Mr. Gaffney has gone about:!
the matter that has been foolishly;
looked upon as an affair of the heart
and a Romeo and Juliet, affair, in a
cold and matter of fact way, and has
demonstrated that a “faint heart- never
won fair lady,” and has shown his
courage and demonstrated the effect-
Uveness of his system to the complete
satisfaction of all concerned. But we
stray from the subject. The wiles of
I the typewriter are mysterious and
j none can tell where they will lead,
i- 1 we resort to the. scissois in
vj an att( . ni p( t (> tell what we mean to
j say but experience some difficulty in
expressing. The following clipping
from the Spartanburg*Herald of the
14th throws much ligiit. on what the
scribe has been for the last hour
faintly trying to express to Ledger
readers:
"Col. John M. Gaffney of Gaffne-
and Miss Amanda Stewart-, of Spring-
field, Mo., were married at the Nor
mandy Hotel yesterday morning by
! Magistrate R. B. P-aslay. The groom
I is a well-known citizen of thd above
named city, where he has resided fori
the past fifty-seven years. The liride
is a tail, well-dreissed, decorous look-i
I ing person from Missouri.”
The citizens of this city are now
busily engaged in extending congratu-f
j lationa-unto the the hannv bride and;

: his successful capturing of the pirze.j
We, like other mortals, hear tales
and we beg to repeat one that reads]
like “Buffalo Bill” and “Red Riding]
Hood,” that we picked up at the
news stand so far as heir" interest-1
ing is concerned. It is said by many;
on our streets that in the ease of the 1
newly wed couple, just mentioned, it,
was not, as is usually the case, love
at first sight, but love before sight;
and the ripening and full blossoming
of love when sight had reached its ze
nith and the two met. face to face. We 1
pronounce this easily the host kind of
love, and congratulate the two on
successfully “getting together,” if we
will be allowed to resort to slang. It
it said that the wooing was done on
paper and that neither was aware 1
how the other should look until
Soartanburg served as a meeting
place for those seeking matrimony j
and Gaffney, the renowned and cele
brated Gaffney (we refer to the city-
now) is again thrown in the limelight 1
and in the public eye, this time as a
matrimonial centre. Buster Brown
is not. a fairy; he has never been ac-;
cused of being one. and he doets not
claim this to be a fairy tale, hut a
simple statement of startling facts,]
nossibly colored slightly by a none
too vivid imagination, but we must
insist in ending the tale and puttir'
a beautiful “finis” at the bottom
something like the fairy tale style:
“And they were married and lived
happily ever after.”

The Original Dixie Quartette.
The original Dixie Quartette, who
have sung themselves into fame and
fortune, comprise four clever gentle^
men, who combine the very rape qual
ities of singers and comedians, and
who have for years stood at the head
of high-class minstrel attractions.
Their plaintive plantation melodies
and popular ballads, interspersed
with bright bits of comedy in their
sketch of southern life, “Uncle Rufus’s
Dream,” has made their reputation
co-extensive with this country. There
is no lover of real, refined minstrelsy
but who enjoys their rare exhibition,
as the repeated encores to which they
are compelled to respond nightly is
ample testimony. The Original Dixie
Quartette is to be seen only with the
