Into an Alley, But She Successfully
Resisted Him.
Macon, Ga., March 14.—The frantic
screams of a young lady on her way
home from the Dannenberg comp.my's
store after she had reached the vicin
ity of Oak and Arch streets, caused a
rush of citizens to the point and tht
horrible sight which greeted their ap
proach was that of a negro fleeing
through the darkness while his victim
lay on the lawn in an unconscious con
dition where she had been dropped
when fear seized her assailant.
A mulatto negro man had grabbed
Miss Myrtle Buffington and had started
across into an alley. He had followed
her two blocks from Ballard’s school,
in the direction of her home, and wait
ed for this moment when she was too
far distant from assistance to sum
mon help. He then made a sudden
dash, seized her arm and was making
his way into the alley when a buggy
turned a corner and the occupant, a
white man. heard the cries and stop
pod. Before he had realized what
had occurred the negro was gone.
Without thinking of immediate as
sistance for the young lady those who
ran to the scene hurried after the ne
gro and police assistance. Nearly a
hundred citizens were soon on the
scene and directing the plans for cap
Utying the negro. They searched all
night long and are still trying to locate
hhn.
Miss Buffington, who was taken to
the house of a neighbor, and revived
from the shock, was unable to give a
complete description of the negro. She
was passing through a thickly settled
portion of the city, and was at no time
half a block from a reskieaee where
sbe eculd have received all assistance
necessary, but the flead seized upoa

were ready to begin the search in 10

assisted in the search, but the negro
had escaped.
Several quiet arras*s have been made
by toe police in the hope ef locating
the ascaflant of Miss Buffington, and
it is believed the party is safely be
hind the bars. Extra precaution is
being taken by Chief Conner and his
men. and the wrath of citizens is not
being exercised in any disorder. A

GEORC A CONVICTS STRIKE.
But Yield to Force and Gladly Returr
To Their Work.
Waynesbonj, Ga., March 14.—News
reached the city that 20 of the 26
state felony convicts quartered near
Midville bad struck and refused tc
go to work. This news was sent to
the county authorities and Price Pal
mer, superintendent of the public
works, went to the camp to investi
gate the occurrence. Upon arrival
upon the ground he found the convicts
enjoying a hearty meal. Failing to
induce them to go to work by gentle
means and persuasion, he was forced
to resort to more dastric efforts.
Hitching two mules to the center
pole of the tent to which the convicts
were chained, he pulled tent, convicts,
etc., out in the field and then plied
the lash. The majority of them were
sorry that they had struck, but several
of them showed fight and one was
shot by one of the guards in an at
tempt to brain Mr. Palmer with a sin
gletree or pick handle.
Their excuse for striking was that
they were not allowed time to write
to theiF folks, and that they were
badly treated.
After the whipping, the convicts
were pleased to get busy. Mr. Pal
mer has been warmly congratulated
upon the manner in which he handled
this hard proposition, and the ease
with which he settled it.
FRY IS SHOT BY RUMSAY.
Former Said To Have Threatened the
Life of the Latter.
Toccoa, Ga., March 14.—Parker
Rumsay, of this, place, shot B. T. Fry
at the front door of the former. Fry is
said to have gone to Rumsay's house,
and after calling Rumsay out, asked
if that was the home of some person
naified by Fry. Rumsay cited Fry to
the next door, but the latter insisted,
with oaths, it is said, that he must
be admitted to the Rumsay home.
Rumsay says that Fry finally threat
ened to shoot and put his hand in his
pocket as if to draw a weapon.
Rumsay quickly fired one shot,
which passed just under Fry's chin
and lodged somewhere in the back of
the neck.
Fry's left side is paralyzed. Th*
physicians are unable to say yet
whether Fry will recover.
Rumsay surrendered to the police,
but as no warrant for his aarest was
sworn «ut he was released.
