The citizens of Thickety and a number in this city were consider ably stirred up Friday afternoon by the actions of an unknown man who strongly resembled a tcamp. The man went to the house of Mrs. Pin son, who is the wife of the seetdon- master it Thickety and asked her for a cup of coffee. The lady brought the coffee whereupon thd man rough ly grasped her arm. She was maiural- ly Tery much frighbeneld and alarm ed her husband and his section men who were at work near the scene. The man was frightened and walked away passing by Mr., Pinson and his men very calmly and unconcernedly, they suspectipg nothing bv his ac tions. He came in the direction of Gaffney, hence when the party dis covered what had happened they has tened toward this city. Those who took part in the mirsuit were about a score strong and were armed. Chief Detective Hainey, of the Southern’s corps of sleuths, was in Gfeffnev Fri day evening and was interested in the case. The tramp was overtaken lat« Friday evening in the! suburbs of the city and given a most vigorous thrashing. The whipping given him was an awful one, a whip being worn out on him. After the thrashing he was told to leave the Slate and when last seen was hurrying toward the North Carolina lin^ He nrobably considered himself fortunate to es cape with a thrashing, as some in the narty entertained thought of either a lynching or a shooting bee, with Conviction of Qoorg* Hasty. (Columbia State.) The conviction of George Hasty of murder, after a fail trial and exhaus tive defense by competent lawyers, is an achievement for the law. In this Instance at least it is a' vindfea- tion of South Carolina and of Chero kee county. However cruel the mur der. a South Carolina lifry appears constitutionally averse to letting a white man hang for his crime and therefore Hasty was recommended to the mercy of the court, that recom mendation having the effect of chang ing the penlty from death to im prisonment for life. Of course there will be appeals but there should be no false sympathy for the murderer and no weight should be given to mere technicalities on which pleas for a new trial may be basefl. The law’s delays have already been too grossly frequent; justice has suffer ed too seriously; the erlminal has received too much consideration and thei odtraged law and the outraged commonwealth too little. George Hasty, the proprietor of a hotel, attempted to force his way into the room occupied by an actress. He was repulsed. When rebuked by two of the actors of the company, he drew a revolver and killed both of them. An a’tempt was made during the trial to prove that the young woman whom Hasty insulted was immodest and that one of the slain men was her illegal lover. Just what bearing that had upon the crime of Hasty it is difficult for the layman to under stand.
