FELL FROM TRAIN.
Freeman Hudson Injured In Gaffney
While Pursuing Hit Wife.
Freeman Hudson, a white man. ap
parently about 35 years of age, was
seriously hurt In this city early Tues
day morning by jumping or falling
from a train. Southern train No. 35,
which Is due in Gaffney at 11:50
P. M., reached here that morning
shortly after 4 o’clock.
The accident to the young man Is
surrounded by an air of mystery and
more than ordinary Interest, owing to
rumors afloat. As the train reached
the city, just below the station, oppo
site the Gaffney Manufacturing com
pany, the man fell or jumped from It
while it was still in motion. His fall
was unperceived and he w r as found
about an hour later bv the watchman.

The man has only regained conscious
ness to speak a few words. He has
bin since the'accident at the Palmetto
House, where he Is receiving medical
attention .
Details of the affair are very meagre,
owing to the fact tha he is unable to
make a statement and practically noth
ing is known of him here. From what
can be gathered, however, it appears
that this man and his wife have been
living at Forest City and she decided
to leave him. She did so with another
man, taking along their two-months-
old child. The husband seemed to ob
ject to this and gave chase, overtak
ing the pair at Blacksburg. Their
train had not arrived and those near
the Blacksbuig waiting room affirm
that the husband and the wife entered
into a lengthy wrangle about the dis
position of the child, which continued
until the arrival of the train.
The entire crowd entered the train,
Hudson, however being without funds,
was unable to pay his fare. He called
unon his wife, who gave the name of
Mary Hudson, for money, but it is
said she refused to pay Itis fare. The
discussion possibly continued until the
train reached the snot where Hudson
alighted. The supposition is that ’‘e
left the train before it reached the
station to avoid any trouble with city
police officers as to failure to pay fare.
The woman, man and child are re
ported as having" gone on, supposedly
to Spartanburg.
The condition of the injured man
continues serious. He was able to
utte'- a few words early Tuesday,
stating his home as Newton, N. C., and
his father’s name as John Hudson.
The woman who had heretofore
been Hudson’s wife, returned to the
c’ty to see her injured husband Wed
nesday, but became dissatisfied soon
after her arrival and departed, return
ing to Spartanburg. The child was
with the woman, but the man who
had succeeded Hudson did not put in
an a/nnearanee this time. The in
jured man’s father arrived in the city
late Wednesday evening and is with
his son. Last reports from the bed
side of Hudson state that he is badly
hurt but chances seem possibly alit-
tle more favorable.

Rev. L. R. Gaines preached an ex
cellent sermon Sunda ,r from St. John.
19th chapter and part of the 19th
verse: “Jesus of Nazareth, the King
of the Jews.” After the usual service
a special meeting was called In hon
or of Mr. William Jefferies, whose
sudden and sad death has caused uni
versal sorrow. A snecial rrtlde per
taining to this meeting will be pub
lished and sent to the sorrowing fam
ily. Once during a conversation with
the writer. Mr. Jefferies said: “My
children have always been a source
of p tasure to me. I always trusted
them to do right and they have never
given me any cause to doubt them.”
