Col. E. J. Watjson. immigration
commissioner of South Carolina, at
a salary of $1,900 a year, has Je-
oliaed an offer of $3,000 a year from
the city of Augusta. Ga.. to act as
secretary of the Chamber of Comr
merce, or some organization of that
nature, and he does so on the ground
that he would rather serve his
country at the smaller, salary than to
serve a private institution at t':e
larger. And the Cotonel is eminently
correct. Wo have known him for
years. He was one of the best men
that ever donned newspaper harness
ami he lias made and will continue
to make the finest immigration com
missioner in the land. W e want him,
however, to remember that the best
place on earth for good immigrants
to locate is in Cherokee county, and
remembering it. to send us several
thousand. •

and circumstantial evidence is that
it was written by a Gaffney man in
