“I know that bloody-handed and
drunken mobs have said so but what

they say? Yet there are millions of
men who pretend to he moral and
claim to he sensible in this country
who go tp these drunken mobs to get
information relative to the conduct of
colored mdn.
“Without multiplying words, I wish
to say that hell is an improvement up
on the United States when the negro
is involved. If a little ignorant and
stupid white man, who was never
heard of and never would be heard
of until ten thousand years after the
resurrection trump, wishes a little no
toriety he begins to belie and slander
the negro and bounds into popularity.
And I challenge any one or all of
them to meet me in public discussion
and. I will show that the negro is a
far better man than they are.”

Rochester, N. Y., was convicted of
