The local cotton market yesterday
was 10.75, with very little of the
fleecy staple being offered.
The weather indication fo^ today is
fair and warm, which Is also an indi
cation that the “gee-haw” will echo
o’er the hills and Alps of Cherokee.
Dr. Simms announced Sunday night
that he expected a protracted meeting
to begin the first Sabbath in April and
that Kev. Wm. E. Hatcher, of Virgin
ia, would help.
Dr. R. C. Garland, the popular and
accommodating manager of the Gaff
ney Drug Company, has installed an
up-to-date cash register on his coun
ter. “Pa” Garland is nothing if not
up-to-date and the addition is thor
oughly in harmony with its surround
ings. It is already proving a draw in"
card, as they flock from far and near
to see how gracefully “Doc” rings up
the chink.
Mr. Claude Wilson, of this city, was
brought here Friday from Bliacks-
hurg. where he was very panfully in
jured the same day. He was engaged
at his duties as fireman of an engine,
whitii was standing at the watering
tank there, when he slipped from the
top of the engine, striking his head
on a box ear and otherwise suffering
from the fall. It is thought that his
injuries may prove serious, although
tuat cannot be definitely stated.
Dan Robbs and Saul Camp, both ne
groes. convicted or selling liquor at
the last term of court in this county,
considered yesterday morning about
daybreak a favorable time to make a
dash for liberty from the convict tent
just on the outer edge of the city
which glories in the name of Happy
Hollow. They were detected how
ever, and brought back. Both were
very much frightened by the few
shots sent after them and concluded
that they had better wait awhile be
fore making their escape.
Excerslses at Limestone College
were suspended Friday in deference to
Mrs. Victor M. Montgomery who pass
ed away at her home in Spartanburg
Thursday evening. Mr. Montgomery
is president of the board of trustees
of the college and both he and bis
father have done a great deal for
the good of the institution. Dr. Lodge
and the senior class were In atten
dance at the funeral services. Mrs.
Montgomery was a daughter of Cant.
H. P. Griffith, the venerable Instructor
In English at the college.
Fred Archer, a small negro boy who
considers it his privilege to make the
streets of the city a racetrack on his
bicycle, while apparently engaged in
delivering parcels, has proven himself
a nuisance for sometime. He over
reached himself on Saturday evening,
on foot, however, at this time. A
small negro girl was coming down
Limestone street when he tripped her
up causing her to fall and severely
hurt her arm. An officer locked the
hoy up and kept him In the citv pris
on all night which will probably
serve as a lesson to him and others
of the same type. The mayor took
occassion to deliver a short talk at
the session of his court yesterday
morning on the number or negroes
that make the streets of the city their
home part of every day and nearly all
night.
First Baptist Church Notes .
There was no preaching service at
11 o’clock on account of the funeral
of Col. William Jefferies, which oc
curred at that hour.
At night Dr. Smms preached on
“Babes in Christ” to a large congre
gation. Following the service the or
dinance of baptism was administered.
It was a pleasure to have the college
girls at the night service.

Littlejohn-Dawklna Scrap.
A sensation was created in Gaffney
Thursday when Butler Dawkins and
Pomp Littlejohn, who rejoices in the
name of John Wesley, engaged In a
street fight at the busiest hour of
the dav on Limestone street, the prin
cipal thoroughfare of the city. A
crowd collected as soon as it was per
ceived that war was In the air and a
fight Impending. They were awarded
by seeing a first-class exhibition, to
quote a spieler for a carnival attract
ion, one “well worth your time and
trouble to witness.” In the skirmish
Littlejohn was struck with a knife
over one eye, while Butler did not
suffer from the encounter. The fight
anparently grew out of previous
trouble between the two. A good deal
of amusement was created in this city
a short while ago by the public an
nouncement by Amelia Littlejohn
throuirh thp local that she had
paid a fabulous price for a small strip
of land which she had purchased from
a socle*” of which Butler Dawkl""
a prominent member. When her at
torney had figured it un. Amelia (who,
by the way, *is the better half of the
pugnacious Pomp) in the same press
announcement states that she was
nayine at a rate which, if the strip
had amounted to any size, would
have nlaced the price well into the
thousands. It developed that Butler
had engineered th deal, he acting as
financier for the society. Bad blood
arose between Dawkins and Little
john on the strength of this remark
able transaction, and when thev met
Thursday war began. Pomp is an old
negro with a good reputation and a
respectable appearance, while he de
scribes Butler as a “stuck-up town
nigger." When everything is taken
into consideration this description
does not miss him far. Both have
been tried and fined for their puglistlc
efforts on the streets.
When the Curtain Went Up.
A fair audience was present in the
city hall yesterday morning when the
curtain went up for the first act of
the mayor’s matinee. The mayor, of
course, essayed the title role. He was
assisted by police officers and a gen
erous cast of nrisoners, witnesses and
spectators. The performance was in
teresting from start to finish and
moved smoothly from one act to an
other until the finish, when the audi
ence, one and all, vowed they had re
ceived their money’s worth. A mem
ber of the troop who was slated to
play a drunk and disorderly part was
absent, but his place was acceptably
fllle’ by an upderstudy, which under-
stu y, by the way, consisted of a five
dollar bill. Pomp Littlejohn, of pu
gilistic fame, was on deck and con
tributed $2.50 for his share of the
bate receipts on the day of the scrap.
The performance today only consisted
of two acts.
