Joe Spake, who has been spending some time in the city with hi. parents left Wednesday for Augusta. Ga., which city he will make his future home. W. D. Gaston, of Buffalo, was in the city Wednesday. W. H. Westmoreland, of King’s Creek, was in the city Wednesday on business. He favored The Ledger with a visit while here. J. T. Moorehead, of Wilkiusville. was in the city Wednesday. W. D. Gaston, from beyond the Broad, was a city visitor Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Jefferies return ed to the city Saturday from a pleas ure trip to Florida. Miss Nanti Bess Thompson left Saturday for Atlanta, where she will reside in the future, having accepted a position in the Gate City. Miss Bettie Lipman, who has been the guest of the Misses Nelson, has left the city for Atlanta and others points, where she will visit before turning to her home in Knoxville, Tenn. Charles P. Ligon. of Spartanburg, was greeting his many friends in this city yesterday. Farmer Moore, of Grover, was among the visitors to Gaffney yester day. Mr. Moore renewed his subscrip tion to Tlie Ledger while here, which shows he knows a good thing when lie sees it. Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Turner and little son. of Converse, spent several davs in tlie city this week the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Brown. Miss Winona Phifer has returned to tlie citv after attending the Anderson- Arnold wedding at Woodruff. Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Cudd. of Spar tanburg. are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Carpenter. Mr. H. L Bomar of Spartanburg, was a Gaffnev visitor this week. Mr. J. F. Whisonant. road represen tative of J. Edgar Poag, the real es tate dealer of Hock Hill, who “cuts the earth to suit your taste,” was in the city yesterday on business. With Mrs. Floyd Baker. The Woman's Literary Club of Gaff nev met with Mrs. Floyd Ba^er on Saturday afternoon. The meeting was a business one and the name above was agreed on for the club. A constitution and by-laws for the club was adopted by the ladies. The membership is now complete. Provision was made for any new members in case any now enrolled should withdraw. The time of meeting was changed from Saturday afternoon to Thursday af ternoon. The club meets next with Mrs. Thomas L. Brown. The meet ings in the future will be held twice a month instead of every jyeek. AN UNWILLING PRISONER. Such was Mrs. L. U. Campbell Wed nesday at Her Home. Mrs. L. U. Campbell was the victim Wednesday of a very unusual as well; as painful experience at her home oni Buford street. Mrs. Campbell was! alone at her home Just before noon l and had occasion to enter a room in! the house which was little frequented and had been used as a lumber roo— While engaged at several duties in the room the door, which was equip ped wth a spring lock, was blown to. Thus when Mrs. Campbell desired to leave the room she found herself un able to do so and became very much alarmed. Her repeated screams for assistance brought no answer and her alarm increased as the minutes went bv The room was in such a position that the only exit was the door, no windows being available. The now thoroughly frightened lady continued to call loudly for assistance without success. Finding herself unable to attract attention she attempted to force the door open, finally discover ing a bottle, with which she tried to push her way out. To add to her dis comfort the bottle broke, severely cut ting her fi'and and wrist. A gentleman passing faintly heard the cries of the lady but thought nothing of it and did not attribute them to anyone in trouble. Finally, driven to despera tion. she frantically tugged at tha door until she was able to jerk it open. Her wrist was badly sprained in tugging on the door. Much wonder is expressed at how Mrs. Campbell was able to prize open the stout door. I- addition to the cut and snrained wrist she is now suffering intensely from the nervous shock. Whilf her condition is not to be envied, by any means, it is hoped that she is not seriously injured and that she will soon be able to be about as usual. Floresheim Shoes Man Who Cares!
