Paper Tells of Work Now on to Raise
. Money to Employ Gaffney Lawyer. .
That the Actor’s Society of New
York is making a great effort to se
cure the conviction of George Hasty
for the shooting of two actors some
weeks ago. is evidenced bv the man
ner in which the society has started
to work In the metropolis raising
funds.
The story appended, taken from the
New York Telegraph, will be of con
siderable interest here:
The Actor’s Society Is still doing
everything in its power to aid the
authorities of South Carolina in bring-
ng George Hasty, who shot and klled
Milifn Bennett and Abbott Davison to
justice.
A committee has been appointed
and books opened for subscriptions to
a fund to pay the expenses. Already
$570 has been received from the fol
lowing sources: The Actor’s Society
$250; James K. Hackett. $250: Wil
liam Courtleigh. $25; Austin Walsh,
$25.
Members of the committee wish it
to be distinctly understood that the-
do not doubt the integrity or ability
of South Carolina officials, huh in a
case ike this, where many of the wit
nesses are theatrical people who may
be widely separated at the time of
fie trial, it will be necessary to make
some nrovision for them while they
are in attendance.
It is ®ot quite true that a New York
lawyer has been retained to aid in
the prosecution. Le Barbier was con
sulted as to the proper method of pro
cedure here. Special counsel will be
engaged by the committe to arid the
commonwealth’s attorney, but) the
counsel will he a reside*! of the coun
ty in which the crime was committed.
The com pan v is composed of the
folowing well-known members of the
profession:
William Courtleigh, president: J.
K. Hackett. secretary: Mark Ells
worth. Harold Hartwell. Ed. McWade.
W. D. Stone. Maida Craigen. Bessie
Taylor. Mary Shaw. Ralnh Delmor'
Frank Burbeck. George G. McIntyre,
