Wilkinsville, Jan. 5.—With this let
ter we begin our new year’s work and
hope to help make our letters wel
come visitors in every homo where
they come or may come during th3
present year—1906. While we can
hope to add nothing to the material
make-up of the newspaper work, we
trust that we may contribute some
thing to make our section feel that its
best interest is not entirely neglected.
In this fast age of “commercialism”
we are drifting too far from the mov-
ings of our forefathers and paying too
little attention to the material and
durable affairs of our communitv. The
discrimination of pure literature and
. healthy thought food for those who
ar'e’tb come after us is our motto.
We don’t' care to set. ourselves up as
a model nor source from which such
improvements emanate. Far from
that. We onlv propose to cultivate a
taste for others’ good work along this
proner consent of the parents or guar
dians of such contending parties is in
order. These and a hundred others
that come in for the protection of
society and reople who are unable to
protect themselves, ought to claim
,ne attention of our lawmakers.

With the facilities we have for doing
so, every nook and corner of Cherokee
county—in fact of the whole State—
might be covered with correspondents
who could give from time to time the
happenings of their respective locali
ties and thus bring themselves into
touch with the outside world.
That the newsoaper is a public
educator is no longer a debatable
question. That has been settled by
the usage and experience of the past.
Why the young people—boys and girls
—who have not the advantage of the
best school facilities don't devote
enough time to writing letters to keep
them in practice, if not to make them
absolutely proficient, is a question we
can’t answer satisfactorily to our
self. They seem to think that in
order to write for a paper they must
have a first class education. This is
all nonsense. The editor will rehash
the matter and make their letters
readable without destroying the
writer’s meaning. That is his busi
ness.
Then, again, almost anything will
help “fill out” a news letter.
“Why,” said a veteran newspaper
man to your correspondent many
years ago “an account of a dog fight
will be read with much interest when
it is nut in print and sent out to the
vorld.”
Much of the matter used by (us)
newspaper correspondents don’t
amount to anything more than a
fashionable dog fight, if even that
much.
Lately we have had the pleasure of
meeting and forming the acquaintance
of quite a number of bright boys and
girls, who might spend their leisure
hours profitably in writing letters for
this or some other newspaper which
would take pleasure in publishing
them. And in the meantime It will
train the mind for such-work until
it can be done with ease. Often we
meet people who say they can’t write
letters, for when they stop to spell
a word they forget what they want to
write about and the consequence Is
they leave out words or write them
too often. This is all the work of
training their mind and band to work
in harmony with each other.

THE TRAGEDY AT GAFFNEY.
All Good South Carolfnians Deplore
the Death of Hasty’s Victims.
Freenmn Tilden in the Malden
(Mass) Evening News.
Charleston. S. C., Dec. 19,—By the
time this reaches you, The News will
have printed a story of the lamentable
tragedy at Gaffney, S. C., in which
Milan Bennett was shot and killed.
I naturally feel more than a journal
istic interest in the death of Milan
Bennett, as I remember him as a tal
ented musician, and graduate of the
Malden schools.
I am writing to you, however, not
so much to offer my own condolences
though those will be readily under
stood I think; but to say for the peo
ple of South Carolina how greatly th'ey
deplore such an affair.
The killing of Milan Bennett has a
far-reaching effect that is fully appre
ciated here. The belief that has wide
ly circulated, and the opinions that
have been published, that human life
is held cheaply in South Carolina can
not but receive a fresh impetus from
this event.
From present information which I
have at hand, the killing of Milan
Bennett was a cold-blooded and pre
meditated (in the English law, at
least) murder: the work of a villain of
the lowest order, the keeper of a ho
tel in Gaffney. This man of the name
of Hasty, was of a type which is not
peculiar to South Carolina, nor to any
part of the country. The hotel was
not of the best order, but of a Mud
which the exigencies of a traveling
troune would naturally force them to
accept.
It Is the belief of those who should
know the circumstances which sur
rounded the case that Milan Bennett
went to his death entirely innocent of
offense against any one, after being
forced Into a defense of a member of
his company who could not defe^ *
herself.
The law of South Carolina pre
scribes “against pistol toting” and is di
rected against just this class of per
sons represented by the man Hasty.
It is unfortunate that this law is not
more strictly enforced. It is one of
the wrongs that the good people of
the State suffer at the hands of the

Friends in this city were given a

unusual sight proved a source of
