Gilmer has accepted a position at the freight depot. Mr. Gilmer succeeds Mr. Hancock, who recently resigned. He entered upon his new duties yesterday. Jim Miller was before U. S. Com missioner J. B. Bell yesterday, accus ed of seying whiskey. On account of insufficiency in the evidence, the case against Miller was dismissed. At. a meeting held December 30th, 190o, tne Board of Directors of the Merchants and Planters Bank declar ed a semi-annual divident of 4 per cent, payable January 1st, 1906. Mr. and Mrs. Roland Gaines and lit tle daughter, Julia, who have been spending the holidays with Mrs. Gaines’ parents at Jefferson. Ga have returned to their home on East Vernon street in this city. Yesterday was New Year's dav and a legal holiday. The banks closed and the postoffice observed Sundav hours. Whil^p a good deal of business was done in the city, the usual feeling oi quiet incident to a holiday pervaded the air. Quite a little comment is already | being made in this city upon the an nouncement that Mr, E. H. Gaines’ new ale will be called “Schnapps Ale.” Mr. Gaines having been with the Reynolds Tobacco Company so long made the name of "Schnapps” as-1 sociated with his product a natural conclusion. The Baracca class of the Cherokee- Avenue Baptist church has elected officers, to serve for the next six months, as follows: W. C. Durham, president; J. H. Broom, vice-presi dent; J. S. Wells, secreatry; J. B. Holland, treasurer; G. P. Hamrick, teacher. Committees on executive session will be appointed. An instance of Southern hospitali ty was the dinner given Sunday at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Pryor, at Midway. Messrs. W. W. Thomas and A. W. Doggett from this city attended. The guests were greet ed with a table loaded with choice) viands and tempting delicacies. Mrs. Pryor and daughters presided grace fully in serving. * A case of small importance was be fore Magistrate C. T. Bridges yester day. Will Whelchel and John Hamp ton were charged with malicious mis chief, said mischief consisting of burning of peavines and hay on the lands of the Limestone Manufacturing Company. The case was dismissed against these two. Another fellow was charged with complicity in the deed, but made his escape before the hearing. Social Events. Ah event in Gaffney society circles was on Friday evening when Miss Wilma Gaffney was the charming hostess to the B. B. Club. Miss Gaff ney entertained in her usual delight ful style and all present thorougly en joyed themselves. Music filling the air harmonized with the hum of inter esting conversation during the eve ning. Partners for refreshments were chosen by mating cards, being appropriate quotations. The adieus that were made when the hour made it imperative were reluctant indeed. Those present were Misses Sarah Rice, of Union; Floy Sarratt, Pearl Craw ley. Clara Sarratt, Jessie Lipscomb. Lula Garrett. Stella Hamilton. Win nie Davenport. Messrs. Earl Car penter. Keith Folger, Victor Lip scomb, Leon Gaffney, Eugene Wood, Harry Wilkins, Marcellus Steadman. Kyle Davenport, Harry Wheat, Irwin Magness, I^owry Walker and Brian Bell. The B. B. Club was delightfully entertained at an informal meeting at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Wheat on Thursday evening. Splen did music was rendered by members of the club during the evening. This little club is fast proving a factor in society circles in Gaffney. Those present at this meeting were Misses Sarah Rice, of Union, Clara Sarrtt, Jessie Lipscomb, Stella Hamilton, Wilma Gaffney. Floy Sarratt, Freeman Garrett and Misses Urquhart and Duff. Messrs. Latta Parish, George Hayes, Harry Wheat, Earl Carpenter, Leon Gaffney, Keith Folger and Brian Boll added their quoto to the general amusement.
