That Time On Two Charges.
Birmingham, Ala., Dec. 13.—Frank
Smith, a negro, who was sentenced
at Montgomery, Jan. 4, 1905, to serve
a term of 144 years in Pratt mines on
two charges of criminal assault, es
caped from the mines. A night con-
stable at Woodlawn, a suburb of Bir
mingham. arrested a negro for vagran
cy. When the prisoner showed up in
court be was sentenced by the mayor
to serve 10 days in the street gang.
He grinned and chuckled as he heard
the sentence pronounced. A Birming
ham detective, who happened to be in
the court room, noticed the negro’s pe.
culiar manner, and examined him
more closely. It turned out that the

He will be returned to Pratt mints,
where he will continue to serve his
sentence of 144 years.

Father and Mother Injured Trying
to Save Tots.
Dubois, Fa.. Dec. 13.—Six children
were burned to death at Lindsey, near
Pnnxsuiawney, and William Morgan
and wMfe, the parents, with their two
remaining children, barely escaped
with their lives. The names of those
burned are: Thomas, 11 years; Pearl,
6 years; Grace and Ethel, aged 3;
Rachel, 18 months, and an infant, aged
3 months.
Both the father and mother were
badly burned in attempts to save their
little ones from their burning house.

Attempted Suicide.
Atlanta, Dec. 13.—C. C. Kiser, the
well-known broker, shot himself with
a revolver al noon Wednesday in the
hallway of his residence, on ISast Har
ris street, and it is doubtful whether
he will recover. Mr. Kiser had been
in failing health for some time, and it
is not thought that he was himself at
the time he attenipted to take his life.
Captain Lindsey Reappointed.
Atlanta, Dec. 13.—Captain John W.
Lindsey of Wilkinson county, has been
reappointed by Governor Terrell as
pension commissioner for a term of
three years from Dec. 1C. 1905. This
is the beginning of Oaptain Lindsey’s
third term as pension commissioner,
he having served six years ending
with next Saturday. There were six
or eight applicants for the position
besides Captain Lindsey, but most of
| them had practically withdrawn from
the race, cutting down the opposition.
