THE LEDGER.
Tuesday ana Friday,
H. DeCarnp, Editor and Publisher,
W. Griffith. Local Editor.
NOTES AND C MME JT8.
The future f>f no town was ever
brighter than that of Gaffney. Watch
us grow in the next few years!
■ ■ •
By all moans we should have some
bind of a business organization. As
It is. we are moving along; but with
a little push we would go at a mo’-e
rapid gait.
• * •
The municipal campaign is on. The
slogan of every voter should be for
the elevation of men of integrity,
honesty and ability, as well as men of
progressive ideas.
• * *
Mayor Gaffney has called a meeting
of the fire department for Wednesday
night at 7 o’clock at the city hall.
This is a step in the right direction,
and it is to he hoped that our fire de
partment may be greatly improved.
• • •
Just as we expected. Some of our
pro-dispensary contiemporaries are
haring quite a lot of fun at our ex
pense on account of the controversy
between Mr. Trescot and Mr. Hal'
man, but the fact remains that our
condition is better than during th<
reign of the dispensary, and we be
lleve it will be a long time before the
people will consent to either dlspen
s&ries or barrooms again.
• • •
We don’t know how many blind
Tigers’ were in this county before the
dispensary was voted out, or how
many are here now; but we do know
there is not near as many people to
be seen* under the influence of whis
key as there were before—notwi*Ti-
standing that we advertise Checkers
and Peruna. But it wouldn’t do to
abolish it entirely, because some day
our friend of the Yorkville New Bra,
or some other thirsty knight of the
quill, might visit us; In which event
we could offer him Checkers or Pe
runa. It might be a poor substitute;
but perhaps better than none at all!
Drayman Arrsted.
(Greer Observer.)
Herndon Upscrmb, colored, dray
man for the Greer Furniture Co., was
arested Monday by Deputy Sheriff W.
C. Durham, of Cherokee coufity, and
carried to 'Gaffney to answer the
charge of getting goods under false
pretense. The alleged act was com
mitted some two years ago when Lip
scomb was a resident of Gaffney. Lip
scomb is an honest and well meaning
darkey and we hope he can clear him
self of the charges against him.

A CAR: OF SEWING MACHINES.
Gaffney Hardware Co.
To Wash White Articles.—Wet the pieces*to be washed; rub the
soap on well—especially over the soiled places; then roll up the pieces
and put them int a tub with just enough lukewarm or cold water
(not hot) to cover them. Use either lukewarm or cold water, according
to your own comfort.
Let the clothes soak about thirty minutes. The dirt will then be so
loosened that it will come out easily on the wash-board or in the wash
ing machine. Do not boil or scald the things. After washing them
rinse the clothes thoroughly—blue, ring and hang out. This method
purifies and whitens the wash.
Flannels and Other Woolens.—Wash them in lukewarm suds, rinse
thoroughly in lukewarm water, wring loosely, and hang up at once. As
these garments must not be boiled, Fels-Naptha is particularly effec
tive in washing them, preventing roughness and shrinking.
Scrubbing and House Cleaning —Fels-Naptha so ip washes dishes,
cleans the kitchen, porcelain tubs, tile floors, oil cloths, brightens paint,
whitens floors, and does all like things throughout the house most quick*
ly and easily with lukewarm or cold water.
T i Remove Grease and other spots and stains from clothing, carpets,
or anything —Brush first and tljen apply to the places some of the soap
lather, leave it on a few minutes, and rinse off well with a rag or sponge.
The Hands and Skin are not irritated by Fels-Naptha, because
nothing injurious is used in making this soap; there is no dipping first
in hot and then in cold water; an even temperature is a great preserver.
Other Advantages.—Fees-Naptha soap will d‘o splendid work
quickly. The wash is completed without boiling or steaming, and very
little rubbing. Garments are not worn out, nor their fibre destroyed by
chemicals or by boiling. No fuel is needed. There arise no poisonous
suds-steam vapors to breathe. It does more work, does better work, and
does it easier. Harms nothing, not even the most delicate fabric.
