Fumes of Redwood Cause Awful Suf fering of Schooner’s Crew. New York, Nov. 22.—A cargo of red wood, the iumes of which tainted the food and similed the water, was re sponsible for a terrible adventure which befell the Carman bark Wer ra in the South Atlantic ocean and which was reported yesterday by the officers of the steamer Koreanna. The steamer is in port here from Calcutta. While in mid-ocean the Ko reanna sighted the hark becalmed and flying a distress signal for provi sions. Four sailors in a boar put out from the bark for the Koreanna *and those on board the steamer were shocked to see that the four oarsmen reeled in their seats from exhaustion. The con dition of those remaining on the bark was found to be even more pitiful. It was explained that a cargo of red wood obtained in South America while heavy with sap had tainted both food and water with its fumes. For six weeks previous to the Koreanna’s ap pearance, the 22 men on the bark had drunk rain water and eaten salt pork, livery man of the crew was ill. Whe n You Have a Bad Cold. Sacramento, .Cal., Nov. 22.—Four special trains operating on passenger schedules are carrying to New York the shipment of horses from the Ran cho del Paso. John Mackay, superin tendent of the Haggin ranch, accompa nied by General Agent W. H. Shed dan. the Illinois CenM-al railroad, traveled in the last car of the fourth special. The shipment, it is understood, is val ued at a million dollars and is Insured for practically that amount. The cost of transportation of four hundred horses to New York is about $60,000. There will be a foreman for each train and two grooms to each car. Army Surgeon Makes Report Washington, Nov. 22.—John R. Hoff, medical department, United States army, who receinly returned from the Russian army in Manchuria with which he went through part of the campaign in the war against Japan, has been authorized to the chief of staff to give out excerpts of his official report. Ac cording to Colonel Hoff the number of killed and dead of wounds waa 27T men. and the number of men dead from isease 8.830. These statistics are ex clusive of casualties at Port Arthur and show almost exactly two men dead from results of battle to one man dead from sickness. fails record is. according to statistics, the best made in any war up to the present time. Nov. 22.—Eight hours are to constitute a day’s work in the diamond cut ling and polishing Indus try hereafter, according to an agree, ment reached yesterday by committees representing the Diamond Workers’ Protective Union of America, and the Diamond Manufacturers’ association. The employes in this city are leas than 40. They worked ten hours a day until Jan. 1, last, when they insisted on a reduction to nine. The question of wages for the coming year is also being considered. The men now aver age. it is said, more than $40 weekly. $2,000,0C0 for the Orient. San Francisco, Nov. 22.—Nearly two million dollars in money will be taken out for the Orient by the Pacific mail liner China, sailing on Saturday next. Three-fourths of this, consisting of 50 tons of Mexican dollars valued a( $1,500,000. as already aboard the Chi na and under a strong guard. Such a big shipment of coin has never been sent in a liner for many months. Most of this silver is consigned to Shang hal. The China Is also to take a full cargo of freight and many passengers. Portugal’s King in France. Paris, Nov. 22.—King Charles of Portugal arrived here today to return to President’s visit to Lisbon. The king was met at the Dauphne railroad sta tion by M. Lou-bet and Premier Ron vier and was escorted with Imposing military honors to the foreign office where the royal visitor has been es tablished. The king will remain here three days and will be entertained with state dinners, a gala performance at the opera, a military review and a hunt. The streets and public build ings are elaborately decorated. Mrs. Hubard in New York. New York, Nov. 22.—Mi>s. LeonMas Hubbard, the explorer and laborator. reached h ?re yesterday and went on to Willlamstown, Mass., where she wil visit a friend of the family. Mrs. Hubbard will rest for several days and then begin to write her own version of her husHcnd’s expedition and death. She intimates that she has obtained new data which will throw light on the 111 fated of the expedition.
