THE LEDGER.
Tuesday and Friday,
t-a, • . DeCamp, Editor and Publisher,
A. W. Griffith. Local Editor.
NOTES AND C -MME 4T8.
Dear old Greenville has followed
the footsteps of Cherokee, having
voted out the dispensary by a vote of
3 to 1. Welcome to the ranks of the
free and the brave, Greenville.
• ft *
Gosh! Uncle Ben is got his wish.
He said he wanted about a dozen
counties to vote out the dispensary,
and they have gone and done it. Now
we wonder if he wants another dozen
to go and do likewise?
* • •
And now comes Greenville, steppin'
high.
’Tis of her walk the way;
She voted out the G. M. I.
With a whoop, last Tuesday.
How’s that, Messrs. Charlotte Ob
server and Anderson Mail?
* • •
The development of the Broad river
water power recently sold by the
Gaffney Manufacturing Co. would
mean more for Gaffney than any en
terprise contemplated in years. We
sincerely trust that the purchasers
may soon begin this important work.
• • •
The write-up of Orangeburg in last
Sunday’s Columbia State was a most
creditable piece of journalism. The
matter was prepared by Mr. J. E.
Norment, and the subject matter dis
closes the fact that his fertile brain
has lost none of its cunning by reason
of confinement in the governor’s of
fice.
• • •
The announcement has been made
that Messrs. D. A. Tompkins and
J. P. Caldwell, owners of the Char
lotte Observer, have acquired a con
trolling interest in the Greenville
Daily News. This is interesting to
the readers of The News, for it means
a better morning paper for the Moun
tain City.
• * •
A few more cases of frenzied finan
ciering such as that of Messrs. W.
B. Smith Whaley, J. Keith Dargan
and Thos. C. Duncan will make
moneyed men gun shy of South Caro
lina investments. It’s better to go a
little slower and be a little more se
cure than to be Napoleonic in charac
ter and at last suffer defeat.
• • •
We are in receipt of a copy of The
Southern Field, published at Athens,
Ga., by Messrs. T. Larry and Yancey
L. Gantt, formerly of the Headlight,
Spartanburg. The Southern Field is
a stunner. It fias more reading m
ter than any otner weekly we have
ever seen. The Messrs. Gantt know
how to get out a good, readable paper
and they are demonstrating this fact
in a most practicable manner. We
wish them all manner of success.

This thing of attacking any official
in office, unless he does Something
criminally wrong, Is not exactly right.
Every citizen should lend his support
to the administration so long as the
administration does t ie very best it
can do, whether he agree with the
administration or not. Certain it is
that the present town council have
not had a rosy path to trod and it does
not appear to us that it is magnani
mous to make their burden heavier
when we could do something to make
it lighter.

The following from the Clinton Ga
zette is such good advice that we
unhesitatingly produce it with hearti
est commendation:
We believe there is no safer invest
ment for a young man nowadays than
the investment of his savings in the
old Pine fields of the Piedmont sec
tion of South Carolina. No matter
how thin and worn out the old red
hills may seem, every one should own
a few acres to fall back' on and im
prove upon in future times when, we
truly opine, the owner and tiller of
the small farm will be the most in
dependent and happy man of all.
Young man, buy a small farm and im
prove it. Don’t be, like too many
others, over-eager to move to town
and “live by your wits.’’
Arrested for Peonage.
Deputy United States Marshal A.
L. Hallman returned Tuesday from
near Blacksburg wherd he arrested
John Martin, Thomas Martin and El
len Martin, who live in the northeas
tern part of Cherokee county, on a
charge of peonage. They are all
white and are charged with holding
a colored youth, Fitzhugh White, in
peonage/ They were carried before
U. S. Commissioner Trescott at
Blacksburg and released on a $500
bond each, for their appearance be
fore him for a hearing Monday. This
is quite a serious charge, and is
probably the first case of its kind on
record in Cherokee county.
$ioo Reward, $ioo.
The readers of this paper will be pleased to
learn that there is at least one dreaded dis
ease that science has been able tc -mre In all
itsstiiges and that IsOatarrh. Hall’sGatarrh
Cure Is the only positive cure now known to
the medical fraternity. Catarrh be nsr a
constitutional disease, requires a constitu
tional treatment. Hall’s Catarrh Cure is
taken internally, acting directly upon the
blood and mucous surfaces of the system,
thereby destroying the foundation of the
disease, and giving the patient strength by
building up the constitution and assisting
nature in doing its work. The proprietors
have so much faith In its curative powers
that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any
case that it fails to cure. Send for list of
testimoniuls. ^ ~

A Barn Burned.
The crib and barn of Mr. J. F. C.
Scruggs, who lives in the western
part of Cherokee county was burned
between eight and ten o’clock Wed
nesday night with a loss of three
cows, and all his corn and forage. He
had $110 Insurance. The fire is sup
posed to have resulted from the act
of an Incendiary. This is the third
fire which has occurred in this neigh
borhood within the last twelve
mbnths. the other two being on the
land of M. J. Hicks, and for the burning
of which George Camp, who is now
in North Carolina, was tried.

If You Can't
Every
Two Minute,
Physicians tell us that all
the blood in a healthy
human body passes through
the heart once in every two
minutes. If this action be
comes irregular the whole
body suffers. Poor health
follows poor blood ; Scott’s
Emulsion makes the blood
pure. One reason why
SCOTT’S
EMULSION
is such a great aid is because
it passes so quickly into
the blood. It is partly di
gested before it enters the
stomach ; a double advan
tage in this. Less work
for the stomach; quicker
and more direct benefits.
To get the greatest amount
of good with the least pos
sible effort is the desire of
everyone in poor health.
Scott’s Emulsion does just
that. A change for the
better takes place even be
fore you expect it.
