The Mutual Benefit Life Ins. Compy.
“During the present Insurance investigation in New York, Mr.
Hughes, the counsel for the investigating committee, called the
Actuary of the Mutual Benefit L,ife Insurance Company, of New
Jersey, to the stand and asked if the expenses of his company
were not about 25 per cent, of the income like those of the other
concerns under investigation; and when the Actuary replied that
the expenses were only 15 per cent, of the income, Mr. Hughes
excused him from further testimony, and made no inquiries
about irregular deals and rake offs, such as have been keeping
the officials of the big concerns on the anxious seat.” From an
article appearing in The Literary Digest, Oct. 7th, 1905. :

Apprehensive of Fresh Outbreaks the
Governor General Has Promised tc

Odessa. Nov. 8.—Outward calm baa
ivlurned here, but the tension is still
great. Reports that the Jews are pre
paring for ttrrible vengeanse on the
Christians are being industriously cir
culated among the lowest and most ig
norant classes, and it is feared they
may lead to a rescrudescence of an
archy. These reports declare that
the Jews intend to blow up the church
es and distribute poisoned foodstuff.-
to the Christians.
Prefect Neidhart, to whom much ol
the responsibility of last week’s oc
currences is attributed, is still in o.
flee, despite urgent demands for his
removal.
The prosecutor general has invite
all eye-witnesses of the outrages to
give testimony at the forthcoming in
vestigation.
Apprehensive of fresh outbreaks the
city councuk has secured the promise
of the governor general to place mil
itary guards at. all places where the
numbers of Jews recently rendered
homeless are now being sheltered.
The university has sent three profes
sors to St. Petersburg to present to
Count Witte a full account of last
week’s atrocities with a demand for Me
Instam removal of the authors.
The municipality, the university off
clals and the barristers are co-operat
ing in .arranging for an independent
inquiry as they are mistrustful of offi
cial investigation.
The chamber of commerce has of
ficially announced that the spirit trade

The foreigners, the chamber declared,
feared to deal even with the wealthiest
merchants who may at any moment be
killed or ruined. Grain is purchased
only when on board of a ship ready to
sail.
The American, British and other con
aula have all sent interesting detailed
accounts of the recent events to their
governments, explaining the real char
acter of the outbreaks and naming ihi
supposed authors.
As an indication of the wide area
of the disturbances, the Glaziers cor
poration has ascertained that over 70,
000 window panes were smashed.

WOMEN AND SOCIETY.
[Address communications for this col
umn to P. O. Box 304.1
Never was there a season when
warnings against extremes were
more needed, but such warnings are
likely to have little effect. There are
women who will buy the difficult colors
and the trying lines in hat. frock and
coat as surely as models with these
characteristics are presented, women
whose only idea of something chic is
something striking and bizarre. But
on the other hand we shall see women
of taste more luxuriously and exquisite
ly dressed than at any time within,
recent years.
A very lovely shade of green ofj
faint whitish tone, with the slightest
tint of blue in it, a color that might
well be dubbed ice green, is among
the light pastel shades shown in
cloth, Henrietta and silk.
A cashmere frock in this shade was
chic and was simple. The skirt was
circular and untrimmed save for short
points and straps piped* in green taf-
teta matching the cashmere and set
horizontally around the skirt bottom.
The bodice was cut low r at the throat
to show a little chimisette and collar
of lace, and was slit in points on each
shoulder to show lace underneath.

Many Persons Have Catarrh of Kidneys,
Or Catarrh of Bladder and Don't Know It.
President Ncwhof and War!
Correspondent Richards Were
Promptly Cured By Pe ru na.
Mr. C. B. Newhof, 10 Delamare street, '
Albany, N. Y., President Monteflore
Club, writes:
••Since my advanced age / find that
/ have been frequently troubled with
urinary ailments. The bladder seemed
irritated, and my physician said that it
was catarrh caused by a protracted
cold which would be difficult to over
come on account ot my advanced years.
I took Peruna, hardly daring to believe
that / would be helped, but / found to
my relief that / soon began to mend.
The irritation gradually subsided and
the urinary difficulties passed away. I
have enjoyed excellent health now for
the past seven months, f enjoy my 1
meals, sleep soundly, and am as well
as I was twenty years ago. I give all
praise to Peruna.”—C. B. Newhof.
Suffered From Catarrh of Kidneys,
Threatened With Nervous Collapse,
. Cured by Pe-ru-na.
Mr. F. B. Richards,609 E Street,N.W.,
Washington, D. C., War Correspondent,
writes: ‘‘Exactly six years ago I was
ordered to Cuba as staff correspondent of
the New York Sun. I was in charge of a
Sun Dispatch boat through the Spanish
American War, The effect of the trop
ical climate and the nervous strain
showed plainly on my return to the
states. Lassitude, depression to the
verge of melancholia, and incessant
kidney trouble made me practically an
invalid. This undesirable condition
con tinned, despite the best of treatment.
Finally a brother newspaper man,who
like myselt had served in the war, in
duced me to give a faithful trial to
Peruna. 1 did so. In a short time the
lassitude left me, my kidneys resumed a
healty condition, and a complete cure
was effected. I cannot too strongly
recommend Peruna to those suffering
with kidney trouble. To-day I am able
to work as hard as at any time in my
life, and the examiner for a leading in
surance company pronounced me an
“A risk.”
In Poor Health Over Four Years.
Pe-ru-na Only Remedy of Real Benefit.
Mr. John Nimmo, 215 Lippincott Bt.,
Toronto, Can., a prominent merchant of
that city and also a member of the
Masonic order, writes:
“I have been in poor health generally
for over four years. When I caught a
bad cold last winter it settled in the
bladder and kidneys, causing serious
trouble. I took two greatly advertised

kidney remedies without getting the
desired results. Peruna is the only
remedy which was really of any benefit
to me. I have not had a trace of kidney
trouble nor a cold in my system.”
Pe-ru-na Contains No Narcotics.
One reason why Peruna has found per
manent use in so many homes is that It
contains no narcotics of any kind. Po*
runa is perfectly harmless. It can bo
used any length of time without acquir
ing a drug habit. Peruna does not pro
duce temporary results. It is per
manent in its effect.
It has no bad effect npon the system,
and gradually eliminates catarrh by r^
moving the canse of catarrh. There are
a multitude of homes where Peruna has
been used off and on for twenty years.
Such a thing could not be possible if
Peruna contained any drugs of a nar
cotic nature.
