“During the present Insurance investigation in New York, Mr.
Hughes, the counsel for the investigating committee, called the
Actuary of the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company, of New

concerns under investigation; and when the Actuary replied that
the expenses were only 15 per cent, of the income, Mr. Hughes
excused him from further testimony, and made no inquiries
about irregular deals and rake offs, such as have been keeping

“We’ll call It the ’Peace of Portsmouth/ *'
Says the loyal New Hampehlre swain.
"No; yer don't,’’ aay* tne down east
Yankee;
"ft’s the 'Peace of Klttery, Maine."
“How s that?” says the youth from Ports
mouth.
"It's here the commissioners dwelled/’
'T don't care a dern/’ says the Kittery
man;
‘TVs hero as the meetln’s was held."
"Now. hark ye both," says the president's
friend;
"You folks have xot nothin* to say.
Who did all the work, I‘d Just like to
know—
It's the 'Peace of Oyster Bay/ ”
Then authority spake from the capital's
halle—
For the government couldn’t be ‘'done"—
"This achievement great," says the de
partment of state,
'Ts the ‘Peace of Washington.’ ”
In such a serious state of affairs,
With trouble so surely a-brewin’.
If wo can't have peace as to where they
made peace.
Why, the country T1 *0 to ruin.
So I reckon there’s only one thin# to do
To save us from strife and hate,
And that's to beseech good Emperor Bill
To come over and arbitrate.
He's been fidgeting around to get Into this
show.
And now's a chance to appease him-
Just let him proclaim for Klttery, Maine,
Or anywhere else to please him.
