Judge Klugh yesterday heard some
appeals of liquor cases from Mayor
Gaffney’s court and in each instance
sustained the mayor. All of which in
/ery gratifying. W’ith a mayor fa
tally bent on enforcing the law and
an upright judge to sustain him. the
way of the illicit liquor dealer will
be hard indeed.

For the past few weeks we have
been so very busy we have been un
able to do all we wanted to; but leaf
we delay it too long, we want to ex
tend our congratulations to Mr. John
Charles McNiell, the Charlotte Ob
server’s poet, on winning the Patter
son Memorial Cup, a trophy awarded
by Mrs. Lindsay Patterson, of Win
ston-Salem, to the North Carolinian
who had achieved the greatest liter
ary success during the past year.
Surely the laurel was worthily bes
towed!
