curred Fifty Years Ago.
Oakland, Cal., Oct. fl.— What is be-
iitved to be a clew to a postolfiee bur
glary that ceurml 52 years ago in Al
ameda c< u'kv. was discovered today by
workmen engaged in demolishing an
old building at East Twelftn street
and Twelfth avenue, Easr Oakland.
In 1352 the building was occupied by
the Clinton postoffice and an express
office. In December of that year bur.

contents disappeared.
The thief was never apprehended
nor was the mail recovered. Today a
moldy bundle of letters and papers
was fund when a wall of the old build
ing was torn down. There was a draft
for $100 addressed to Francis Stead,
from the New Orleans banking house
of Horae, &ean & Co.. It is dat
ed Sept. 30, 1853, and never pain, 'i *

ture down to 61 degrees, Now Orleans

of the state, while advices to the
weather bureau brought report* of
frost as far down as Fort Smith, Ark.
The effect of the fall in temperature
will, of course, he to still further thin
out the mosquitoes and tend to in
crease the improvement in the fever
situation, while helping along the cam
paign that is now being mads for the
removal of quarantine restrictions. In
the city the day was bright and clear,
and the bracing air had & most admir

that the Ad mas Express company has
been victimized to the extent of $100,-
000, supposedly through the pecula
tion of an employe.
The following official etatement of
the affair ie given for publication.
“At 4:15 o’clock Monday, OcL 0, a
bank in Pittsburg, Pa., delivered to
the Adams Express company at their
offices at G10 Wood street, Pittsburg,
a package of currency containing $100,-
000. Of this amount $80,000 was In
$100 bills, $10,000 in $50 bills and Lie
remainder, $10,000 in $5, $10 and $20
bills.
“This package was received and re
ceipted for by Edward George Cunllffe,
who was then acting in the place of
the regular money clerk, who was ill.
“Ounliffe left the office at the usual
time last evening and this morning
when he failed to report for duty, a
hurried examination was made of his
department, and it was learned that
about $1,000 of funds entrusted to bis

placed the matter In their hands.
