OPENING OF THE SCHOOLS.
The public schools, viz: Central
school, Cherokee Avenue school,
Limestone Mill school, Fairview
school, and Colored school, formerly
known as Gaffney Graded schools,
will open September 18th, at 9 A. M.
Pupils without promotion cards
will be required to pass successfully
a written entrance examination.
The same text-books will be used,
and can be obtained at the court house
from the county superintendent.
Parents are urged to have their
children be present promptly at 9
A. M. the first day.

C. A. Wood has resigned his position

pany. and left yesterday for Green

Cotton brought ten cents on the
Gaffney market Wednesday and yes
terday. Over a hundred bales were
sold during the two days.
R. J. W. Moss will be at Abingdon
on Saturday, the 30th inst, to meet
his former singing class. He wishes
all the members to be present.
, Dr. Simms will occupy his pulpit as
usual at the First Baptist church Sun
day, both morning and evening. He
desires a full attendance at both ser
vices.
A revival meeting is in progress at
tlie Cherokee Avenue Baptist church,
conducted by the pastor, Rev. G. P.
Hamrick. The meeting began Sunday
night and will probably continue for
a week or ten days.
Mayor Gaffney had three young
white boys before him yesterday
morning for shooting bats within the
corporate limits of the town. He
fined two of them $2.imi each and dis
missed the other.
Messrs. Carroll & Byers will nave
a special sale, Tuesday and Wednes
day next, of lace curtains, rugs, car

L. H. Wells, a clever representative
of the Shelby Aurora, spent yesterday
in the city. The Aurora is one of the
few Reiyildicsn papers in the South

.Mr. T. M. Crews, a traveling repre
sentative of the Charlotte Observer,
spent a day or two in the city this
week in the interest of bis paper. Mr.
Crews is a bright young man, of pleas
ing address and an entertaining talk
er. and we were indeed glad to form
his acquaintance.
Miss Jennie Adnbrose arrived in the
cily Wednesday to take charge of the
millinery department of Messrs. Car

tive of Norfolk Va., but came here

been for some time trimming her pat
tern hats and further acquainting her

New Cotton Coming In.
Mr. N. C. Snead, the cotton weigher
here, says that up to yesterday 240
bales of new cotton had been bought
by Gaffney buyers. The number prob
ably went to three hundred yesterday,
as much more was brought in during
the day. The platform at the depot
has been enlarged considerably, and
will now accommodate several hun
dred more hales than formerly.
At the Presbyterian Church.
Rev. J. W. Lafferty, of Eatonton,
Ga., is expected to arrive In the city
tomorrow, and to preach in the Pres
byterian church gunday morning and
afternoon. Mr. Lafferty has won high
distinction as a minister, and the con-
gregation of the Presbyterian church
should turn out en masse to hear him.
A cordial invitation is extended to
everyone to attend both services.
A Golden Anniversary.
The friends of Mr. and Mrs. John
Brohawn, of Baltimore, are congrat
ulating them on their fiftieth anniver
sary of married life, which occurred
Wednesday. Lovely remembrances
were sent them by the relativoe in ibis
