Louie R. Gaines has opened a stock
of staple ami fancy groceries at his
nlace of business on Limestone street
next door to Walter Baker. Louie is
m earnest, faithful citizen—a man
who has spent much time and energy
in an effort to do good and deserves
success.
Miss Irene Wheat was the charming
little hostess at a delightful lawn par
ty given last evening from 7:30^o 9 to
her many little friends. The time
was spent playing games, etc., and
all present vo*ed Miss Irene a de
lightful entertainer. During *he even

Miss Lillie Green, the efficient
r*pel-a*or of the Western Union here,
has resigned to accept a similar po
sition with the Western Union at
Gastonia. N. C. Miss Stone, who has
been connected with the Postal here,
succeeds Miss Green with the Wes
tern Union. Miss Stone’s successor
has not been named.
Little & Dougherty, colored, have
opend the Cherokee Cafe in the rear
of the Merchants and Planters Bank,
with Perry Little as manager. Perry
was the compositor and manager of
the Gaffney Sun. but because of some
misunderstand with the proprietor, R.
r. Corry, gave up the job to go in
business for himself. He serves bo‘h
races (a la Wanamaker) and is very
proud of the patronage he has so far
received.

An Old Time Darkey.
Noah Gaston, of Blacksburg, an anti-

: of his nose, was an interested visitor
at The Ledger office yesterday. He
was accompanied by his daughter,
who Is above the average colored wo-1
man in intelligence. They wanted i
see the printing office and we shewed
them through. The linotype was a
thing of amazement and when we
showed the old man the line as it!
came from the machine he exclaimed;
“And whar do it come from?” His
type is fast passing away. The more’s
the pity.
Miss Sarratt Entertains..
On Wednesday evening Miss Louise
Sarratt entertained a number of her
friends at a seven o’clock tea. Her
attractive home was beautifully de
corated with feathery green and dain
ty pink and white noses. In the hand
some dining room her sis'er. Miss
Ruth, served tea. cakes, ices, etc., in
a very gracious manner. Those who
