county, of which Gaffney is the conn

declaration that not a drop of whiskey
could he obtained for love or money.
After the dispensary what? Pool
rooms, gambling hells and whiskey
joints where our young men are led
from the paths of morality and so
briety.—Lexington Disnatch.
The Lexington Dispatch is holding
prohibition in Cherokee responsible
for an accidental shooting in a poo!
room in Gaffnev-r-and that after the
Gaffney Ledger had fully explained
the circumstances and .condemned
such unlair inference. It is gratifying
to note the weakness of the dispen
sary advocates; they are seizing at
straws and will strain many moral! plaining
points t«* get them.—Columbia State. |
Oh. these dispensary fellows! They
are. indeed, an jncorrigble set. The
Dispatch either does not get The Led
ger or is not a close reader or has
no confidence in what we say. One
of these three things must he correct.
But for the sake of argument we are
going to admit that the young man is
dead, (which is not true): that he was
killed in a pool room; that the pool
room is a blind tiger (which is not
true); that they were there playing
pool, < which is not true: that they were
gambling, (which is not true); and
then we will ask The Dispatch or any
other dispensary advocate if that is
offices never to publish anything of
an anonymous nature, however meri

The dispensaryites and anti-dispen-

not prohibit. The prohibitionists pro
claim that it does. If the liquor ele
ment can get all the liquor it wants
under prohibition and the prohibition
ists are pleased with the workings of
the law, why not make prohibition
unanimous? Both sides getting what
they want under prohibition we see
no. reason to complain, while if we
continue dispensaries and barrooms

Dr. Anderson Replies.
Editor Gaffney Ledger:—In your
issue of the 25th inst. I notice a card
from N. W. Hardin in reply to one
from me. Now my card of the 241th
inst. contained certain statements
relative to a petition that was being
circulated by Hardin and his friend
)• M. Allison, in the interest of thej
former. To the statement so made by
me Mr. Hardin takes exception. I
wish to say that they were not model
with a desire to provoke a newspaper!
controversy, but with the sole object
of correcting some misrepresentations.
A newspaper controversy is very dis-i
tasteful to me. yet there are‘some
statements in Mr. Hardin’s letter of
the 2<ith which, as a man who is re
garded as truthful. I cannot permit to I
go unanswered.
1st. Mr. Hardin says that wheq I
stated “that signatures have been ob
tained to said petition upon the rep-
1 osculation that there was no other
candidate for said office,” that such a
statement is untrue, “because I (Mr.
Hardin) am satisfied no such state
ment was Tnade.” in reply to this I
will say that this statement was made
upon information received from E. K.
Heine. A. M. Bridges, O. A. Osborne,
and Price Martin. Since mv card
appeared in your issue of the 20th inst
I have received additional information
of the same eharacter as the above)
and. knowing the character of all the
liar ties in question. I repeat my for-1
mer statement.
0 id. Mr. Hardin quotes me as say
ing ‘petition Is in circulation asking!
the executive committee of the Dom-
ocrai party of this county to nomi
nate ..r. N. W. Hardin for the legisla
ture." To this Mr. Hardin says, “I
will state that this Is untrue: 1st be-
eause the petition does not so state—.”
Now-, Mr. Hardin’s petition reads as
follow/: “We, the undersigned, endrose
N. W. Hardin as a candidate for the
legislature to succeed Hon. W. D.
Kirby, and request that he be nomi
nated in convention.”
It apj ears to me as useless to say
anything more, because the people of I
rherokee county are too intelligent
not to see from the foregoing that Mr
Hardin’s own statement in the netition
confirms the truthfulness of my as
sertion and contradicts the statement
made by him in his letter (Compare
fiist para? raph of his letter with Iasi
sentence of his petition). And now
.lust a wo-d more. The bit of dema-1
goguism displayed in the closing part
of his card, in which he evidently at
tempts to arouse the prejudice of the
people agai st me, r cannot afford to I
notice, as I am entering this campaign
upon a high plane—conscious of the)
sense of justice which pervades the
homes of the people of Cherokee coun
ty. This reply would have appeared
earlier but for the fact that my time
has been almost wholly occupied with
professional duties.
Very respectfully.
