Mayor Gaffney had a variegated '■rowd of Saturday and Sunday sinners before him yestgrday morning, all for disorderly conduct, but only one drunk. George Scruggs, white, wa^s the first one on dodket. George had the additional offense of vagrancy attached to the charge against him, and the 1 mayor taxed him $25.00 or thirty.flags’ labor on the gang. He couldn’t rake up the twenty-five: so he went to the good roads class, of which he had only recently been a member. Ed Martin, a colored youth, had sim ilar charges preferred against him. and he was given five or ten. He took the ten. George Moore, colored, was on hand also /or disorderly conduct—said con duct consisting of shooting within the city limits. His fine was ten or twen ty. He paid the ten. Ed Cash, a white boy. was fined $2.00 or the alternative of five days’ labor. The fine was paid. The case against a white man for drunkenness and disorderly conduct was continued on account of the ab sence of material witnesses. The police officers are so alert now adays that the blind tigers are becom ing very sly, and cautious animals; consequently, it is difficult to find thoir lairs, and cases of drunkenness are much less frennent in the eitv court. Since our advent in Gaffney we have always been glad to acknowledge Dr. Mason W. Smith as our friend. The Doctor came down in his buggy and took us to his hospitable home, where Mrs. Smith, in true gentlewoman manner, bade us welcome and made us feel at home.
