Fridav the ground was too wet to plow in that section of the county. The twenty-months-old child of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Phillips, of Star Farm, died Saturday, after a short ill ness, and was buried Sunday at El- Bethel church. A. L. Curry, of this city, has just finished the erection of a large ! brick building for Wilkins & Smith at Cowpens. Mr. Curry returned to the city Saturday. Rev. \V. T .Thompson preached at the Limestone Baptist church Sunday morning. Notwithstanding the ex tremely warm weather, he had a veyy good congregation. About noon yesterday there were a good many colored loungers in the city park; some on the seats and oth ers stretched out on the grass. They seemed to be from the country. Blacksburg and Gaffney will play ball at Jefferies’ park this afternoon. ; Go out and see the game. A small ; admission will be charged to defray , the expenses of the visiting team. There were three cases of disor- ^ derly conduct in the mayor’s court I yesterday morning. John Smith, Jas- i per Lee* and Ambrose Jefferies, all colored, were the offenders. Smith paid ten dollars, and the other two five each. Miss Ceicl Bidcz, vocal teacher at the female college at Statesville, N. C., is in the city the guest of Miss An nie Johnson. Miss Bidez is also a re markably clever pianist. Last Friday she played to the edification and pleasure of a number of Prof. John- i son’s friends at his piano wareroom in the rear of Mr. W. O. Johnson’s store. Miss Bidez executed the most difficult pieces with an ease and grace that was charming to witness and lis ten to. Without apparent effort her deft fingers Hew from key to key, playing a regular tattoo. To use a homely, although profanely vulgar, ex pression, "she sho’ kin paw de ivoryV” Miss Bidez also possesses a sweet voice and it is hoped she will grant a Gaffney audience the privilege of hearing her before she terminates her visit. Cotton Blooms Galore. C. A. Spencer, of the Corinth sec tion, is the first to -ing a cotton boll to this office. He i» a few days be hind Preston Glover with his bloom, but ahead of anybody with his' boll. Mr. Silencer has about twenty acres that is as fine as can be, and his son. M. C. Spencer, has about twenty acres just like it. Both boll and bloom were brought in last Saturday. Later in the day Jack Humphries brought us a bloom, and the afternoon mail brought blooms from J. L. Martins, King’s Creek: Joe Pennington, Wilkinsville; and Jim Dawkins, of Horae. Yester day W. B. Isler, of Grover, brought in a bloom which he pulled on the 22nd.
