SHORT LOCALS.
Dr. Simms had a mess of corn from
his garden last Wednesday.
Several bales of cotton were sold
on this market Wednesday and yester
day for 8% cents.
Frank Folger, son of Mr. Gus. Fol-
ger and nephew of Postmaster Folger,
is now assistant in the Gaffnev post-
office.
There will be services at the Bu
ford Street Methodist church Sunday
at the usual hours, morning aand ev
ening.

There was no business done in the
mayor’s court yesterday morning—
not a single offender against the city’s
ord inaces.
The party of young men who went
to Atlanta the first of the week on an
excursion, returned to the city Wed
nesday morning.
The management of Limestone Mills
will soon begin the erection of ten
new tenant houses on the mill pro
perty near the city.
Painters are now engaged in put
ting a new coat of paint on the stgnd-
pipe. The pipe has already been
thoroughly cleaned out.
M. B. Sams, son of Prof. R. O.
Sams of this city, who has been a
student at Clemson College for several
years, was among the graduates in
the textile department of the college
this year.
The Sunday school convention of
the Broad River Association meets
at Macedonia on the 27th and 28th
of this month. Rev. B. W. Spillman,
one of the best Sunday school men of
the south, will he present.
Misses Banna and Ethleen Wil
kins, Winnie Davenport and Mary
Ionise Bomar, and Messrs. Charlie
Cooper, Kyle Davenport, Leo Little,
Vanderbilt Kendrick and S. Frank
Parrott attended the commencement
exercises at Blacksburg the first of
the week.

will no doubt be a spirited one. The
first game will be played this after-

Death of a Little One.
Robert Witherspoon, youngest son
of Col. and Mrs. J. G.. Wardlaw, now
of Yorkville, died yesterday morning
about one o’clock at the home of Prof.
R. O. Sams, Mrs. Wardlaw’s father,
in this city.
The little one was taken sick in
Yorkville sometime since, and was
later brought to this place in the hope
that the change would be beneficial:
but it continued to grow worse until
the end came yesterday morning. The
remains were laid away in Oakland
cemetery yesterday afternoon. Rev.
Dr. Simms conducting the funeral ex
ercises.
Col. and Mrs. Wardlaw have the
deepest sympathy of a host of friends
in their great sorrow.

City Water Scarce.
Mayor Gaffney wishes to impress
upon users of the city water the ne
cessity of not waiting it. The water
is now all drawn from the standpipe,
and should that which is in the mains
become exhausted the city would be
in a serious predicament. Be careful
to use only so much as is absolutely
necessary, and see that none is wast
ed, or you may be without water just
at a time when you need it most, or
when the town may need it most.
Arrested for Retailing.
Tom Scruggs, colored, was arrested
Monday in the upper portion of Chero
kee county by Knifed States Deputy
Marshal A. L. Hallman, on a charge
of retailing liquor without a license.
He was brought to Gaffney and placed
in jail to await a preliminary examina
tion b/fore Commissioner J. ,B. Bell.

First Baptist Church Notes.
Dr. Simms will fill his pulpit next
Sabbath as usual. A full attendance
is desired, both for the Sabbath school
and for the church services. It is
pleasant to see the young people again
who have been off at school. Wel
come to them all.
