Now Orleans, May Cl.—The South
ern Cotton association today issued
its cotton acreage report. The report
Is as follows:
"The estimated acreage for 190-1, as
indicated by the the report of the I'uit-
ed Slates government, amounted to ill,-
730,0(10 acres.
"The decrease in the acreage for
1905 as shown by the tabulated state-
nunt herwith. which was ascertained
from 17,7.')-1 individual reports tiom
farmers, merchants, bank* rs and
others, throughout the cotton belt,
fixes- the acreage this year at 2o,9S0,-
951 acres, u decrease of IS.43 per cent
and 16.05 per c. nt in fertilizers.

was compiled trom reliable statistics >

Fireman Dies Under Engine.
Savannah, Ga., May 31.—Fireman
Frank N. Harris was thrown from an
engine he was driving to a fire this
afternoon and so terribly injured by
the wheels that he dic'd before a phy
sician could reach him. The wheels
passed over his body, breaking every
bone on one side. Harris was a vet
eran in the service. He leaves a wid
ow and children.
Failing to Moke Fortune, Suicides.
Brooklyn. May 31.—Wesley Smith,
21 years of age, committed suicide by
inhaling gas because of his inabilty
to make $1.00(1,000. At the early age
*;f 16 he announced his intention of
amassing that sum and of doing it
quickly and without any "fooling
around.” ho said. Smith visited dif-
firent parts of the world in his * fforts
to amass a fortune, returning to th* 1
city of Brooklyn several weeks ago,
practically penniless.

I States grand jury, which, for the last
I three weeks has been investigating
! the machinations of the alleged beet
! trust, finished its labors and adjourned

have been returned, the evidence de

Death Dream Comes True.
Parkersburg, W. Va., May 31.—Hen
ry King, aged 70. a veteran of th*
civil war, died here. Two weeks ago
he dreamed three times that he had
but two weeks to live and told his
family repeatedly that he expected to
die 'May 28. H* remained in his
usual health until the day previous,
when he was taken sick and grew rap
idly worst until he died—two weeks
to the hour after hi* first Juam.
