Now York, April '26.—Hermann Wi'- helm Yroeber, “King of the Schnor- rers," is a band of professional big- gars i known, is locked up here await ing arraignment on several complaint, by th charity organizations society. Oil ars of the latter allege tha^ Troti er has cleaned up tens of thou sands of dollars in the past four or five years and that the full list of per sons from whom his unique methods procured money would read like a so cial register of New Y'ork. Troeber has lived at expensive ho tels and for years has maintained a home in Hoboken for his wife and child. He is said to have lost large sums of money in gambling both here and in the west. Under arrest with him is his secretary, Otto Wittles, whom he paid $25 a week to attend to the clerical work of his business. Troeber began his operations as a prtifessor of Sanskrit from Heidell* or Leipsic. University men and espe cially professors, were much in his fa vor, and his story generally was to the effect that remitters from home had failed to arrive, leaving him tempora rily in need of funds. In 1902 he was sentenced to six months in prison, for mendicancy. In that case he used the name of Baron Von Manteuffel. Recently he returned to New Y'ork and the charity organiza tion heard of him through the officials of a copper mining company, to whom he represented himself as an expert minging engineer. Technical ques tions asked him placed him under sus picion because he failed to display much knowledge on the subject. When arrested, Troeber and his secretary were enroute to Boston, whence they expected to sail for England. Buffalos Shipped to Oklahoma. Missoula, Mont., April 26.—Thirty- five head of buffalo have been shipped from Arlee by M. Miller, who sends them to a point in Oklahoma "about 300 miles south of Kansas City. The ani mals shipped were adults and an ex ceptionally choice lot. GEORGIA MASONS IN SESSION. Grand Council Convenes in Macon. Grand Chapter Also Meets. Macon, Ga., April 26.—Nearly 300 Masons from all sections of the state were present at the opening sesion oi the grand council at Masonic Tempi© In this city. Grand Master J. C. Green field, of Atlanta, delivered a polished and impressive annual addres to the body. The work of the grand council wm completed at the night session and the order adjourned after a large num ber of Masons were promoted. The election of annual officers occurred at the afternoon session. The officers are as follows: L. W. Burkett, grand master, Ma con; T. F. Moody, deputy grand mas ter, Cuthbert; W. H. Numberger, grand conductor of the work, Augusta: W. A. Wollhin, grand recorder, and grand treasurer; J. J. Hyman, grand chaplain, Arabi; It. H. Taylor, grand captain of the guard, Griffin; J. C. Pos- tell, grand marshal, Savannah; John B. Wilkinson, grand conductor of the council, Atlanta; Max L. McRae, grand Steward, McRae; Lee Wages, grand sentinel, Macon. The grand chapter, Royal Arch Ma sons wil clonvene at 10 o’clock tomor row morning to remain in sesions during morning, afternon and night un til Thursday. The number of visitors will increase at the sessions of the Royal Arch chapter. Grand High Priest Y. A. Wright, of Jackson, Ga., will deliver his annual address at thv opening session tomorrow. White Men Arrested for Lynching. Columbia, S. C., April 26.—A sensa tion was sprung in this state upon the arrest of four prominent business men of Kershaw, charged with the lynch ing of J. T. Morrison, a white man, which occurred in that town on Oct. 2 of last .year. Three other men were ar rested in Lancaster a few days ago in connection with the same case. A preliminary trial will be given the men now under arrest at I^ancaster on Friday. The people of the town ot Kershaw have chartered a special train, which is free to any one desir ing to go to Lancaster to attend the hearing. By some, further trouble is anticipated. New Russian Minister to China. Pekin, April 26.—-M. Pokotiloff, pres ident of the Russo-Chinese hank, has been appointed Russian minister to China to succeed M. Paul Lessar, who died recently. M. Pokotiloff had many years’ experience in Chinese affairs, and is considered very suitable for the position.
