Mr. Newton Kirby, aged about sev enty-five years, died Monday night at his home on Blue Branch. Mr. Kirby was an old Confederate soldier, and a man much liked and respected in his community. Carroll & Byers have installed a handsome new delivery wagon for use at both their stores. It was pur chased through the Smith Hardware company, and is a model.of neatness and convenience. Mayor Gaffney has had a line of electric lights placed over the fountain in the park, which adds beauty to the scene at night. Morgan, of this city, had the misfortune to lose a fine horse yes terday morning by the falling of an electric light pole, which struck the horse, killing it almost instantly. The team was attached to the oil wagon which was standing near the pole. The driver left the team alone for a few minutes just before the accident. The other horse saved itself by springing to one side. While this was a serious accident it is very for tunate that it was a horse instead of a human being. THE REVIVAL. All the meetings are attend ed by large congregations, the mer chants closing their places of busi ness so that their employees may at tend the services. Dr. Hamilton has made a fine im pression upon our people, and he will long be held In grateful remembrance by many of them for his good work here. Services were held on the steps of the Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church yesterday afternoon, and to day it is the intention of Drs. Hamil ton and Simms to devote almost the entire day to their work. Dr. Hamilton has set tomorrow for his departure for his home in Ken tucky, much to the regret of every one who has had the pleasure of hearing his sermons. Ubo In tinifi. i bv ‘Irn.ml-.t- Mayor’s Court. In connection with the Mayor’s i-court the only case to be reported is one begun on Monday morning. It was continued till Tuesday morning and was then continued till yesterday morning, when it was tried. The case in question was a charge against Tom Eskridge, a negro, for fighting. It seems that Tom’s mother-in-law and himself didn’t exactly agree, as is very frequently the case in this particular degree of kinship, and Tom acted in such an unreasonable manner that the said mother-in-law ordered him to leave, whereupon Tom threw a coca-cola bottle ai her, in flicting a very painful wound and ren dering her unconscious. Dr. S. H. Grilfith was summoned and treated the victim. It was necessary for him to sew up the wound. It was owing to the fact that she was unable to appear in court that the case was delayed. However, yester day morning she was present and the case was tried. Tom plead guilty to the charge and owing to the fact that it was a case of a man striking a wo man without sufficient provocation, and in fact, as Mayor Gaffney stated, no gentleman will strike a woman for any cause except when acting in self defense, he was fined $25.00 or thirty days.
