THE LEDGER.

FACTS AND FIGURES.
Thert- are those who think the ques
tion of circulation being discussed by
our contemporary, the Cherokee
News, and The Ledger, is out of place.
As a matter of fact these gentlemen
are not in the newspaper business
and they cannot understand the posi
tion taken by a publisher. Circula
tion, to the publisher, is his stock in
trade, for if he had no circulation the
merchants would not care to use his
columns for the purpose of displaying
their wares. Hence, the nap.er with
the greatest circulation is necessarily
the best advertising medium.
Now to the subject under discus
sion. We quote from the News:
We do not claim to send out more receives, and
papers than our contemporary, (we & , ...
do not know his circulation) but do re would never have mentioned this
claim to send out more in Cherokee riatter had The News not boasted of

tence we differ. As a matter of fact t . ou jj no t have mentioned it then but

all manner of success. We quote
again from that paper:
There is room here for both papers
and every man in Cherokee county
should subscribe to both of them.
They are both public utilities and are
doing a great deal for the upbuilding
of the town and county.
We have attempted to discuss this
subject dispassionately and without
any feeling. We have calculated on
fifty pound paper for our contemporary
when in fact it may be sixty pound
paper it uses, which would ma
terially decrease its average. We
have allowed only thirty pounds of
its edition to go out of the county,
when in fact we know more than that
goes out. In proof of this we refer
to the statement of the postoffice re
ceipts for second class matter as-
published some time ago. The News
l as a most creditable circulation, far
above the average of weekly papers j
in South Carolina, and deserves the
matter because they did not care to
have anything to do with it, we have
been compelled to do the Sherlock
Holmes act, and we give the result of
our investigation. We find that I lie
wish him well.

At tliis season of the year the mind of the little bird turn- to song, and the small hoy thinks of the branch with its bull frogs and minnows, the young mail’s
mind turns to love, and woman thinks of Dress (Joods and Millinery. All nature is clothed in her newest and best apparel and woman should be in keeping
with her surroundings, 11 she would be dressed in the best style and at the lowest cesf, she should look tit our line of Dress Goods and examine our prices. We
have been very careful this season in selecting oar stock, and have put in a magnificent line of Spring Dress Goods and Trimmings.
