The Old and the New Hell.
(Methodist Preacher in the Christian
City.)
Hell has lost its powers as a deter
rent from evil. When men were bom
in fear, lived in dread, and looked on
leath in horror, hell was a philosoph
ical, rational and useful basis of re
-itraint. Do not misunderstand me as
suggesting that hell has died out
The place o f its burning has moved
It was made the terminus of sin, and
>f it men were afraid. That was ra
tional and right. We must teach me
to dread the fires sin lights within.
That is more rational and awful than
iny fires that can burn without. Sin
puts hell into men, not men into he:
The hell of mediaeval days and mort
nodern times, as far as any practical
telping towards righteousness is con
cerned, has gone out. But a more
fearful hell is burning. Only a fev
iave eyes to see it. The speculative
hell is a subject for jokes of comic pa
ters. Thank God. the hell of fact b
tot yet a joke with men. He who
mows anything of sin knows that sin
tnd hell are synonymous. The church
a.* lost the assistance of the strone
right arm of moral law, because she
pushed into the speculative realm a
question that belongs to present fact.
Hell is a present fact to those who
know the kind of ilame that burns in
every moral world.
About Rheumatism.
There are few diseases that inflict
more tortue than rheumatism and
there is probably no disease for which
such a varied and useless lot of rem
edies have been suggested. To say
that it can be cured is, therefore, a
bold statement to make. but. Chamber
lain’s Pain Balm, which enjoys an
extensive sale, has met wtih great
success in the treatment of this dis
ease. One application of Pain Balm
will relieve the pain, and hundreds
of sufferers have testified to perma
nent cures by its use. Why suffer
when Pain Balm affords such quick
relief and costs but a trifle? For sale

One Had Killed His Crippled Child,

Nashville, April 5.—Andrew Hib-

hanged together in the jail yard here
at 7:55 o’clock this morning.
The former’s neck wag broken and
the latter strangled to death.
Scudder murdered his crippled sou,

Both men courageously met their fate
They sang “Old Time Religion” just
before the drop fell. Neither made
any statement on the gallows.
The crime for which the negro, Jim
Scudder, was sentenced to hang today
was the murder of his 3-year-old child.
James Alfred Scudder. Scudder’s wife
had died and his mother had been
keeping the chil for him. Finally
she was unable to keep the child long

Lahore, India, April 5.—The Hill
station in the Dharmsala was practi

quakes. The native quarter was or-
tirely obliterated, many of the inhab
itants were buried in the ruins, most
of the houses in the European quartei
were wrecked and nine persons wert
killed. The people are sloping in the
open air, food is not procurable and
the great distress prevailing is accen
tuated by keen frost.
The entire population is homeless
and encamped on the adjoining hill
sides without protection and practical
ly entirely without medical aid.
A rescue party was dispatched to
Dharmsala today. The Europeans
killed at Dharmsala were Mrs. Robin

the troops there, and her daughters.

MINE SUPERINTENDENT KILLED
The Newspaper.
(Greenville News.)
Ony man can take a newspaper. It
is the cheapest thing he can buy. Ev
ery time a hen clucks and has laid an
egg his paper is paid for that week.
It costs less than a postage stamp,
less than to receive a letter. It comes
to you every week, rain or shine, calm
or stormy. No matter what happens
it enters your door a welcome friend,
full of sunshine and cheer and inter
est. It opens the door of the great
world and puts you face to face with
its people and its great events. It
shortens the long winter nights. It
is your advisor, gossiper and friend.
No man is just to his children who
does not give them the local paper.
No man is good to himself who
does not take newspapers.
